After releasing in a fairly lacklustre state, We Happy Few released its first major update back in December which improved many aspects, but there was still a lot of work to be done. Compulsion have just released the second major update, dubbed The Maidenholm Update, which "drastically changed the way We Happy Few is played." It is out now on Steam and GOG.com and will launch very soon on Xbox One.
The first major addition is a brand new island for the Village of Hamlyn; Maidenholm. It's been a long time coming so while you're exploring the new land, why not dial your playstyle down to Birdwatcher so you have less threat from the NPCs and don't need to worry about food or water. Playstyles are the other new major addition, with Vigilante being the other one that makes the game harder; NPCs are more dangerous, your hunger and thirst deplete quicker, you get the idea. Or you can stay on Downer mode, which has kept everything pretty much the same as previously except for a few balancing tweaks.
In slightly smaller changes, the Wellington Wells police force now have pets. The Peeper is a small robot drone that accompanies the rozzers as they patrol the town, and if it spots you it will scan your soul for residues of joy, so make sure you stay on your meds! Look out for Plague Wastrels too, they'll be on you in no time if you don't watch your back. Hooligans, like the ones from the Shibboleth encounter now also roam freely in the Garden District, and guard some water pumps so be prepared for more encounters.
There's a lot of random events and encounters that occur as you explore Hamlyn, and a whole bunch more of just been added. Meet the resident rock star Nick Lightbearer in two different encounters, become the butcher's apprentice in Super Meat Boy and get involved with religion in The Church of Simon Says. More hiding spots have been added in certain bushes, flower pots and carts and there's a series of new creepy robots that shout at you, telling you exactly what they think of you. Not great if you're trying to hide from the villagers.
