GRTV News - Highguard's website has gone dark

Are the game's days numbered.

Audio transcription

"Hello everyone and welcome back to another GRTV News.
Today we're going to be talking a little bit about what's become sort of our favourite game to talk about, High Guard.
The reason we're doing so is because, as of last night, the game's website went dark, meaning it's basically been scrubbed of all of its content and it's basically now just, you go there and it doesn't show anything."

"And this is particularly concerning because if they're doing that, it likely means that the game itself doesn't have much longer left before they pull the plug on it.
I personally thought that they'd at least try and leave it up for a while and see what happens for five, six months or something like that.
But no, it looks like High Guard is going to be on its way out sooner rather than later."

"We're going to be talking mostly about that in this news piece I'm going to bring up, but around the same sort of time as this story broke.
Another story broke by the Gamefile's Steven Totilo, who basically reported that High Guard, despite being claimed that it was sort of indie and that it was self-funded and all that, it was actually financially backed largely by Tencent."

"So it looks like they're sort of pulling a fast one on us and I have thoughts about that, so we'll get on that in a moment.
So yes, High Guard's future in doubt as official website suddenly goes dark. The future of High Guard looks increasingly shaky.
So the future looks increasingly uncertain for High Guard, the free-to-play shooter that was supposed to be the next big thing as it closed out the Game Awards late last year."

"Just a few hours ago, the game's website suddenly went dark and the only thing left to greet visitors is the logo and a short generic message stating that the content no longer is available.
Barely three weeks have passed since the launch, which was anything but grandiose, marked by mediocre reviews and an almost frosty reception from players.
And the odd situation also comes in the wake of the dev team being let go, with most of the Wild Light employees being forced to leave the office with only a core team left, supposedly."

"But the closed-down website seems to suggest something completely different, and the question is whether this is now the final nail in the coffin for High Guard.
What do you think? And this is what shows when you go on the website now, which is basically a confirmation that it's on its way out.
But yes, and this also comes again as this report came that High Guard was actually backed by Tencent."

"Now to me, that brings up a lot of issues and a lot of concerns for the simple reason that the game was supposed to be indie.
And if it, you know, when an indie game like this fails, it's a little bit sad to see because it's people going out of their way to try something and be creative and try to stamp their sort of place in the games industry.
Now, that's why, despite what's happened to High Guard, it sort of had like a sour taste to it a little bit because while I think many of us are sort of tired of these live online multiplayer shooter type things that just pop up here and there everywhere."

"Seeing the way that it's been treated is not exactly the most pleasant thing.
However, if it is backed by Tencent, then you have to ask the question, how has the launch failed so badly?
Why was the marketing campaign so poor? Why were people laid off so quickly as well?
You know, if it has the financial backing of such a big company as Tencent, you have to ask why are these developers being laid off within two weeks of High Guard not exactly living up to its expectations?
There are a lot of questions I think that this poses and hopefully we'll get answers to them sooner rather than later."

"But the thing to note is that High Guard is probably not going to be around for much longer.
We don't have any official information about when it's going to go offline.
But the very few players that are actually checking into the game and the fact that the website is now basically unavailable, it seems to suggest that High Guard will be going very, very soon."

"So as we hear more about this, be sure to keep posted and updated.
But otherwise, that's all the time I have on today's episode of GeoTV News.
But I will be back now tomorrow for the next one of the week. Stay tuned for that.
Thank you for watching. I'll see you there."
