Call of the Elder Gods - Tatiana Delgado OXO Video Game Museum Interview

On the occasion of the inauguration of the "Made in Spain" exhibition about the history of the Spanish gaming industry we caught up with the head of Out of the Blue Games, who had a lot to share about both Call of the Sea and its just-announced sequel, but also about the previous American Arcadia, which recently released on consoles.

"Hi Gamereactor friends, we are at the OXO Museo del Videojuego in Málaga as they are inaugurating, they are opening the new exhibition which is all about it's called Made in Spain, so it's all about the Spanish industry through the years Thank you so much for joining us Tatiana How does it feel to be part of both the exhibition and the history of video games in Spain?
For me it's a dream come true because I was born playing these games that are here and when I was running through the exhibition I played most of them so they were an inspiration for me and being here part of the exhibition with one of my games is a dream come true And that game is Call of the Sea, we have the column dedicated to it behind us There is a dress, I will film some b-roll of it here So there is physical pieces, there is the game you can play and there is some narrative from you You tell visitors about the game, right?
Yeah, so we have decided to bring some pieces that help tell the story of the development of the game We have for example the dress that was the inspiration for Nora's dress, the main character We have also a dagger that was used in the story, it has a very important role in the story We have one physical edition that was released with the game with an art book that is very beautiful And a vinyl soundtrack Yeah, a vinyl soundtrack by Eduardo de la Iglesia that is amazing So we wanted to share all the different pieces of the game with the audience And we know you from Call of the Sea but you also released American Arcadia And now you announced a new game, so let me ask you about the last thing first It was a couple of weeks ago that you introduced Call of the Elder Gods, if I'm correct Which is a direct sequel to this game, 30 years later So what can you tell me first and foremost about the story?
Because I played some Call of the Sea, I didn't finish it, things were getting very weird and interesting But then I wanted to play it on VR and then I stopped there So what can you tell me in terms of what's happening here, coming from the previous story?
So what we did with Call of the Sea was take a Lovecraft tale and give it a twist That story was The Shadow Over Innsmouth Right now what we did is continue the story of Harry, the husband of Nora And we took another story of Lovecraft, this time it's The Shadow Out of Time Okay So even though it's a direct sequel from Call of the Sea, it could be played alone It's an independent story but for Call of the Sea fans they are going to find some things that they are going to enjoy So we are going to put secret things that they will enjoy And I think the main difference is that now we will have two main characters Alright One will be Harry and the second one will be Evangeline That will play a very very important role in this story And if I'm correct from the official description you say that you will be traveling through space but also through time Is that the main sort of mystery here?
Yeah, I don't want to spoil too much but yeah Call of the Sea happened in an island in the Pacific So now we wanted to increase the scope We are going to travel to Australia, to the Arctic Circle But also we will travel to the past and to the future Alright That's enough of a tease of what's going to happen here And tell me mechanically, is there going to be a big difference?
Are we playing first person?
Is there anything else that you are adding in terms of gameplay mechanics?
It will be still a narrative game It's very important for us to tell a story We will have puzzles like in Call of the Sea But we will add several things that will make the experience better First, we have two characters now so we can play with them, have dialogue, have more branching But second, what we will do is set up the difficulty of the puzzles This is one thing that most of the Call of the Sea players told us Some found the puzzles difficult, others too easy So we want to give the chance to the players to adjust a bit the way they want to play I guess it's difficult to cater to them all It's always the same with puzzles, it always happens But in between both games, you released a completely different game Which we also love at Gamereactor which is called American Arcadia It's not that new, but you guys released a new version this very year Earlier this year, that was the console version So what can you tell me was the feedback now that the game is available on consoles as well And it was back when it was already and sort of indie darling already We are really happy to bring American Arcadia to consoles Because we believe it was made for consoles It's like the perfect medium to play this game I think players are enjoying it a lot I believe most of the target players of our age range play on consoles nowadays So we are getting a lot of good feedback And a lot of people are happy that finally it has come to consoles Do you plan on updating either Call of the Sea or American Arcadia for the Switch 2 now that it's available?
Actually you can play American Arcadia in Switch 2 So I think it's amazing that it has this backwards compatibility Anything else that you would like to stress about the new game, about Call of the Elder Gods And when can we expect to put our hands on the new game?
I would say that people enjoy mysteries, stories that leave something inside you after you finish the game Puzzles, just wishlist the game and we hope you can enjoy it And it will be very soon, we cannot say a date yet Alright, we hear the call so looking forward to playing the new game Thank you so much for your time Tatiana And congratulations on the presence here and on being part of the Spanish video game industry "
