GRTV News - EA lays off hundreds of employees and cancels a Titanfall game
Don't expect more from Respawn's popular shooter series anytime soon.

"TITANFALL Morning everyone and welcome back to another episode of GRTV News.
Today, we actually have a few different exciting things that we could be talking about."
"Obviously Borderlands 4 has had its release date pulled forward, but I think we'll talk about Borderlands tomorrow because there is a State of Play happening very late today.
So instead, what we're going to look at and talk about is this new report that has gone around talking about EA, Respawn and Titanfall."
"The short of it is that EA is undergoing layoffs.
Hundreds of employees across EA are losing their jobs.
Respawn has been affected with around 100 people losing their jobs at Respawn.
And as part of the cost-cutting measures at Respawn, the development of another Titanfall game has been cancelled as well."
"Now, some people are referring to this as Titanfall 3.
The general consensus about it is that it was going to be some sort of extraction shooter spin-off.
So to call it a Titanfall 3 is perhaps a bit misleading.
But there was another Titanfall game in development and that has now been canned."
"So let's dive on in and have a look.
So EA lays off hundreds of employees and cancels the development of another Titanfall.
Electronic Arts is undergoing major restructuring, announcing the layoffs of 300 and 400 employees with around 100 of those positions coming from Respawn."
"So the final nail in the coffin for Titanfall, according to a report from Bloomberg, EA has just laid off between 300 and 400 employees with around 100 of those positions coming from Respawn.
As a result, the company has also decided to shut down all development of what was meant to be a third Titanfall.
Bloomberg writes, between 300 and 400 positions were eliminated, including around 100 at Respawn, according to a person familiar with the cuts."
"The decision is said to be part of a broader restructuring effort and aimed at focusing on EA's most profitable and strategically important projects.
So with that, the Titanfall series, long praised by a dedicated group of fans, has once again been pushed into obscurity and shelved in the EA vault.
The cancelled project was intended to reignite interest in the franchise, but it now seems EA no longer sees a future for it."
"So Justin Higgs, a spokesperson for EA, told Bloomberg, As part of our continued focus on our long-term strategic priorities, we've made select changes within our organisation that more effectively aligns teams and allocates resources in service of driving future growth.
Online reactions have, unsurprisingly, been intense."
"In several Reddit threads, frustrated and saddened players are expressing their anger over the decision.
Well, did it just not sell 200 million copies or something mad?
We joke, but generally the consensus is that the game really did underperform.
And Apex Legends also didn't have a very strong year last year."
"And because of that, EA kind of missed its financial markers that it was aiming for.
This is why it's led to this spree of layoffs, apparently.
As for the Titanfall thing, I know a lot of people are upset about Titanfall constantly not being prioritised.
But, you know, Respawn is a bit of a strange developer in a way, because it has this live service title that is Apex that it keeps pumping out new content for."
"It's currently, we assume, in the process of making the third and the final chapter of the Star Wars Jedi series.
So then also have a Titanfall game in development on top of that.
It's a lot of work. It's a lot of different things that Respawn is juggling.
So it doesn't necessarily surprise me that this is the one that has been axed."
"I know people really want to see more of Titanfall.
And I think Titanfall is an interesting game in itself.
But you have to ask yourself in this current climate of video games, where live service games and even multiplayer games can find it challenging to find a place."
"Is it necessarily a wise decision to commit to a Titanfall game, which will probably eat up some of the player base of your already established Apex Legends?
So I'm not saying it's a good thing that it was cut.
I'd personally like to see some fresh blood over EA instead of just this constant rejuvenation of existing live games, whether it's in like new installments like the EAFC series or something."
"But they're all very similar.
I'd like a bit of rejuvenation and this was potentially going to be that.
But at the same time, we're hearing some reports that it's going to be sort of like an extraction shooter.
Those games tend to struggle a little bit these days."
"We've seen a lot of them sort of fail or flop or even get cancelled just before coming out, i.e. hyenas.
So maybe it was it was somewhat a wise decision that it's gone this way.
Although at the same time, you know, a lot of people are hoping for a Titanfall 3.
And if they're counting sort of these sort of spin off or side projects based in the university, you have to look at it and say perhaps Titanfall 3 is not on the cards and not something you should be holding your breath for."
"But again, as we hear more about this, be sure to keep posting.
