The future of Starcraft might not be in Blizzard's hands.

"Without further ado today, we've got an interesting little report coming from perhaps the future of the StarCraft franchise as well as maybe an Overwatch mobile spinoff, so if you thought that Blizzard was going to be controlling all of its IPs forevermore, perhaps that won't be the case, at least for the foreseeable future, as it seems, as was caught by a Korean outlet MTN and then reported on by VG247, that the Korean publisher Nexon is going to be in charge of the rights for StarCraft for the next game in the series, which is very exciting because we've not had a StarCraft game or a full StarCraft game since StarCraft 2, there were expansions which brought a lot of developments to the franchise but really it has been sitting in stagnation and isolation for years and years and years now as Blizzard have just continued to focus on World of Warcraft and keeping that IP alive, you know Hearthstone, Diablo as well recently got a bit of a new game with Diablo 4, but all of that stuff has been leaving StarCraft well and truly behind, but perhaps that could be about to change with a new StarCraft game in the works. It's interesting to note here, as MTN does, that Blizzard and Nexon have basically come to an agreement which allows Nexon to create a new game with the rights of the StarCraft IP, so Nexon had been in a bidding war with other Korean developers and publishers for that for quite some time since the fourth quarter of last year, but now that means that they've won the rights, they've won the ability to make that game, and we could be seeing something relatively soon about what they're going to be cooking up. What's interesting to note is that Nexon isn't tied particularly to the RTS genre for the next StarCraft game, Blizzard has just sort of let them have free reign but it would make the most sense if we do get a return to the RTS for StarCraft because it's what StarCraft is known for, it is an RTS franchise at its core and will continue to be known as that, and especially because we've not had a game with the StarCraft title in so long, it's probably going to annoy a lot of people if it isn't what they know and what they love, which is an RTS. Now, as well, it's worth noting that Nexon also acquired the service rights for Overwatch Mobile in Korea and Japan, which could be a big hit if they manage to get that going, but that's another thing where we'll have to consider, is Overwatch still as popular as it was before Marvel Rivals came about, perhaps there's a bit of a battle to be had there again as Overwatch tries to reclaim itself, its title as the king of hero shooters. We'll have to see about that though, the main thing I think here is the StarCraft IP is getting some new life, getting some new sort of faces behind it and we'll have to see whether it can bring back the legacy that it's built up over the years, because it was at one time one of the most popular RTS games out there, it still is one of the most well-known RTS franchises, but it's been isolated and it's been stagnant for so long that perhaps maybe even when it comes back it won't make that much noise. Let me know though what you think about that, are you excited for a return of StarCraft, do you think they should make an RTS or do you think they should go into a completely new bit of territory, let me know all that and more and I'll see you tomorrow for more GRTV news, goodbye! Thanks for watching!"
