This cooling solution allows the user to better regulate their laptop's temperature, through an external system.
"Hello everyone and welcome to another Gamereactor Quick Look. Razer has made products in the past which in disguised and sometimes not disguised depending on whether it's a Thunderbolt dock or whether it's a stand or something like that, that it gives you some extra functionality to your laptop providing you with better ports and increased cooling. And all of that is to ensure that when you use your laptop in a stationary setting, like for instance if you have a display with you that you need to utilize with a laptop, you might be carrying a laptop to and from work or to and from rooms in the same house and in one setting you might be having it on your lap basically using it on the couch. But then there might be again a pseudo-stationary purpose for it on a desk somewhere where you have your big flashy monitor and your keyboard and your mouse and if you have something like a Razer Blade or even just a semi-powerful MacBook Pro, all of that is really possible. So that is why something like this actually at least on the surface makes sense. This is the Razer Laptop Cooling Pad and the idea is very simple, it's basically in the name. So if we remove these right here, here sits a 140mm fan which moves air away basically and cools whatever it is on there."
"In order for it to do that, it needs a seal and that seal can be provided with these magnetic-based frames. So if you put that on there, it's basically based on the overall shape and size of the laptop that you're using. So when you place your laptop on here, it rests on this little lip right here and the underside will create that seal, then this 140mm fan moves that air. So there is also a dust filter in here which is basically meant to avoid long-term problems and dust build-up basically over the years. And then the extra functionality is basically utilized through this USB Type-A port. So if you insert that, you can use the Synapse software suite to make custom fan curves if that's what you want and obviously as is very present on this picture right here, Razer Chroma RGB. Now it is compatible with between 14-18 inch laptops and one would assume that you would use a gaming laptop for it, a Razer laptop even. But I find it to be a bit weird that they presume a couple of things with this. First and foremost, Razer Synapse can be downloaded by any Windows laptop or even Macs. So for it to be a USB Type-A port drastically reduces the amount of laptops that can be utilized in this setting. Sure, you can use an A-to-C converter if you wanted to but I find it to be weird that when a lot of other Razer accessories comes with USB Type-C, such as their mice, why wouldn't this be USB Type-C? Furthermore, when you move around the back, there is, the good thing is that when you sacrifice a USB Type-A port, you gain three USB Type-A ports. But those are USB Type-A ports. That should be said, should just be obvious basically. So for sure, it can be a headset dongle, which are still off in USB Type-A, could be a keyboard, which is still off in USB Type-A, but an increasing amount of accessories utilizes USB Type-C. And again, a lot of laptops simply has no need for USB Type-A ports and have none at all. And that includes some gaming-based laptops which for instance, due to thin chassis, now sacrifice USB Type-A ports in general."
"So to require an A and give you three A seems a little weird to me. Furthermore, because this is not a USB Type-C cable, it basically closes out a lot of the fancier speed protocols that could be enabled with USB Type-C, such as Thunderbolt. A Razer Blade laptop comes with a Thunderbolt port. Those are there from the 14-inch way up to the 18-inch laptops."
"So if this would have been Thunderbolt, it probably would have cost more than a 150-euro asking price, yes, but it would have been able to provide you with all of the good things that a Thunderbolt protocol comes with, such as display or just faster speeds in general.
Maybe you would want a hard drive based on this because remember, the only reason we have this is to create a stationary functionality for a portable product, meaning that this would be in a place where you need to sit down and all of your equipment would be there."
"Your laptop generates heat that needs to be cooled. So when you have your keyboard, you might also have, again, a storage solution. You might also have a big display. But all of those things or all of the things that doesn't run on USB Type-A and is slow and doesn't require any speed at all, because this would be USB 3.2, I think. Point is, I think that Razer shot themselves in the foot by limiting the speed through this USB Type-A port. I know it's cheap. 150 euros isn't all that much, but just a tad more, and maybe we could have had a slower Thunderbolt connection, which would have enabled some type of display options and just being able to use it with more types of laptops."
"Furthermore, well, I still think the concept is cool. If you worry about your laptop being too hot, this will fix that problem. And the last thing that I just wanted to mention, when we unboxed this just before we started filming, I noticed this foam. Now, I thought at the beginning that this was a part of the unboxing process, that I was supposed to peel it, and then the real foam would be somewhere within this box where I could attach it because it feels cheap, like it's part of the packing materials. But they are there on this as well."
"And then I took a look at the box, which is why we have the box on this desk in this particular instance. I don't know about you, but these images makes it look like memory foam. Memory foam, which can be found on a lot of Razer products, Razer headsets, for instance, and which has a more soft, cushiony, and generally just higher quality feeling feel. And to see this on this picture, I don't know if I feel hoodwinked necessarily, but something close to it because this is not the same thing. So I don't know about the cooling pad. I know that there exists some semblance of alternatives on the market. So I would look out an extra time before settling on this. So thank you so much for watching. See you on the next one."
