A point-and-click adventure with a cultural flair - Book Smugglers Interview with Fluxo Games at DevGAMM
We sat down with Fluxo Games CEO Rytis Jadzevičius to discuss the upcoming point-and-click adventure Book Smugglers, a video game that is imbued with a lot of personal touches and cultural elements from the developer's home country.

"I'm in Lisbon for the DevGAMM 2024 and I'm here joined by Rytis and it's been an interesting story. We're sharing a wine, a Portuguese wine, and I learned about your game, which is, you know, it's a personal story of yours. It relates to your region, to your people, and to your country, so I think it's a nice story to tell, so thank you so much for joining us. What can you tell us about, you know, Book Smugglers and the story you want to tell? Yes, the story itself, that you shouldn't stop resisting when you believe in something, and when you care about something, you should keep it as hard as you can. Like, the story itself, from the history books, Lithuania after resistance, Lithuania and Poland, other countries after resistance were defeated by Russian Tsar Empire, we lost and Tsar banned whole language, like no written everything, only in Cyrillic, which Cyrillic, which is like Russian writing, and we couldn't read or speak in Lithuanian, so we start smuggling books from Prussia back in the day, and that's how the story starts. You start as a mere book smuggler, who believes in the cause, who wants to do something good, and bring good word to the schools, to the children, to priests, and all the villages, towns, and cities. This is 19th century, if I'm correct? Yes, yes. What else can you tell us about the setting, and what's going on, and the characters? The character itself, it has some impact on the choices you make through whole story, because you will have a lot of different events, but you will playing as a man, book smuggler, with choices between different profession, which gives a little bit different bonuses, depending on what you choose, and how you will be called. Okay, and you also have some resource management to it, survival aspect to it, so it's not just like a graphic adventure, where you deal with narrative and items, right? Yeah, we're mixing a little bit different types of gameplay. Also, in the works, we're trying a little bit of mini-games, like something similar, like decoding the language, or something. Besides that, resource management is quite big, because you need to manage your resources for whole journey, to reach from point A to point B, making choices, and have enough health, and maybe money to succeed."
"All right, and this is about sort of protecting Lithuanian language, so if I play, let's say I play in English, is there anything in the game that will somehow show me how the Lithuanian language is? Am I gonna learn about your culture and your language in any way? Well, we're not gonna force it, but if you're really interested, we'll have some snippets on the information, for example, in your own secret hideout, you will have, like after some missions, for example, you brought the newspaper, you'll have old-school newspaper written in old Lithuanian language, which is a bit different from these days, and we will translate it to the English, Spanish, or other languages, depending on what you're gonna choose, because we're gonna port it to 12 different languages. Fantastic, and speaking about porting, what can you tell me about platforms, release details, when is it gonna come out? We want to do on all platforms, but at first plan is PC and Nintendo Switch, later on PlayStation plus Xbox. And the name of the publisher you told me before, they're taking care of this game, and they are also big on the Switch, aren't they? Yeah, they are a Polish publisher called No Gravity Games. And this is not your first game, so what can you tell me about the studio, what you guys did before, and how are you guys, you know, set in Lithuania? Yeah, we've been working on a lot of different projects, the project which, this one, which is released is our second PC game, third game in general, we've done a little bit on mobile, tried, didn't like it that much, came back to the roots, what we like the most, it's narrative PC console games, besides that, we're doing some outsourcing to put bread and butter on the table, so we have a lot of different experiences, working with developers, working with government projects.
