With Luigi's Mansion 2 HD just released it felt trendy to also learn about the promising, asymmetric 1v3 party game Hyde's Haunt & Seek at The Mix presents Guerrilla Collective. In this interview Smol Games' David Turpin tells us about spooky pranks, possessing furniture, levitating objects, and more.
"We're at The Mix presenting Guerrilla Collective at the Grammy Museum and this is David vs. David as we are playing Hyde's Haunt & Seek. We're not actually playing, I'm actually learning about it.
It's a very interesting, spooky party game that is going to release this year."
"I had this very convenient comparison with Luigi's Mansion. What can you tell me about it? Thank you so much for joining us.
Yeah, it's kind of, if you can imagine playing Luigi's Mansion but your friends are the ghosts.
Or imagine you're entering a haunted house and your friends are the ones playing spooky pranks on you and they're hiding and you have to find them. So you have a special flashlight that can illuminate these spectral beings."
"You can absorb their energy. Meanwhile, they're trying to play spooky pranks on you and they're trying to absorb, your fear has energy and that powers them up for the final sort of terrifying haunt that we call, that happens at the very end of the match.
What type of pranks? Like throwing objects as a kitty or?
It's really simple, silly stuff. Like, so levitating objects you'll find is something, a very simple prank that happens."
"One of them is a bathtub fills with blood and there's like disembodied body parts in the bathtub and you look at it and you're like, oh my god, that's terrifying. Not really.
The rats?
There's rats that appear on a dining table and it's, you know, it's like scary. It's spooky, not scary, right?
What can you tell us about the asymmetric gameplay? You know, you're like three, four players and then the one who's alone."
"And how do they play? The one who's alone plays first person. What can you tell us about that?
So the one that's alone is basically seeking out the ghosts to absorb their spectral energy.
By absorbing that energy, the flashlight gets powered up and they can actually see clues hidden in the world and hidden in the environment.
Arrows that lead them to these hidden haunted objects. So there's like a spooky doll."
"There's a cursed camera and you find these objects and those, the spectral power of those objects power up your flashlight even more.
And on the ghost side, they're sort of working together to, it's kind of like a prop hunt type of mechanic.
They're possessing furniture. They're doing little jack in the box type pranks in the furniture.
And they're working together to try to kind of corner the seeker and get them to spout off this fear energy, which then you can get your friends to kind of help collect that energy."
"You actually have to go out and get it once you've got it. So yeah, hopefully that makes some sense.
Is it 1v4?
1v3. 1v4 may be in the future, but for now 1v4.
1v3. And you guys are releasing on Steam for now?
That's right. Yeah. Steam for PC."
"And you guys have a publisher already?
Yes. Didelic Entertainment.
Fantastic. And what's the release window for it?
We're looking at sort of fall of 2020."
"Spooky season?
Yeah. Early access.
Early access first. Right.
Anything else you would like to mention about the mechanics or the art style or the inspirations?
We're currently in development right now."
"We've got a lot of cool, interesting mechanics that we're playing around with.
We're starting to realize there's lots of ways to play Hides, Haunt, and Seek that are interesting.
And so we're doing a lot of exploration.
We're also going to be featuring, right now we have a clown character that we're featuring prominently."
"But now that we actually have a team, awesome artists and animators, we can actually bring more characters to life.
So you'll be seeing that in our release later this year.
Fantastic. Looking forward to playing Haunt and Seek."
"Thank you so much for your time, David.
Thank you. Great talking with you."
