Ubisoft Forward impressions from the Belasco Theater in Los Angeles

Ben and David share their thoughts on the recent Ubisoft showcase shortly after it finished airing, all based on opinions and thoughts after seeing the show live and in-person at the Belasco Theater in L.A.

"Alright, we're in front of Kay Vess' speeder, motorbike-like speeder, which is really nice.
Take a look at that. As we just attended the Ubisoft Forward showcase, which I think was a really nice show in terms of how the show was. Not many surprises, though. And we're about to play and to see Star Wars, Prince of Persia, not the Sands of Time yet, and of course Assassin's Creed and interview the developers. So, yeah, let's talk a little bit about the show and which were your highlights, Ben?
Well, I mean, I'd like to first of all start and just sort of talk about the sort of pace and the way they've done things. I like it when we're not talking too far down the line."

"You know, the show is very much focused on what's coming this year, what's coming probably in early 2025. And that was about it, really. You know, yeah, we had the Sands of Time thing, which I thought I'd thought kind of was a bit of a miss myself. I mean, like we've known that it's been in development for so long at this point that like just seeing a teaser was kind of a bit weird to me, like a cinematic teaser with a date."

"This is still coming, right? This is still coming. I wouldn't expect it to release this year when they've released two Prince of Persia games already. But yeah, it's just, hey guys, this is still coming, right?
Exactly. That's what it served the purpose of. But to me, I like it when we keep things close, right? There's two big games coming out this year, two very big games that in many ways are bigger than a lot of other games that other publishers are doing across the board."

"So, you know, we've got Star Wars Outlaws and we've got Assassin's Creed Shadows, and that's basically what this show is about. Like there were some other things in there, of course, some other exciting announcements and whatnot, but mainly it was like here's a chunk of gameplay for both these games. This is what you're going to do. Here's a developer on stage telling you what it's like and explaining it. You know, it's exactly what you want out of a showcase like this. Like, you know, we can talk about 2025 and onwards at the Gamescom. We can talk about that at TGA or something like that or further down the line. Star Wars Outlaws comes out in August. I want to know more about that and that's what I got. So I was quite happy with that. As for what you were talking about at the start, I mean, I'm going to say Assassin's Creed Shadows, obviously. I'm a big Assassin's Creed nut, so obviously that's the one that stood out to me. But there was a lot of things there. I love Ubisoft, so there's soccer for them. So, you know, all of them were pretty good announcements. It stood out for me. I think it's the first Assassin's Creed I'm going to play in 10 years. I think it looks great. The Japanese setting, the way you can approach, you know, decide how to approach every single step of the mission. I think it's fantastic. And I think Star Wars looked really, really good. We'll see about that."

"A little bit of screen tearing that we saw, but I think, you know, I'm about to play it and I will share further, deeper impressions on it. So, yeah. You know, for Xbox and for the Summer Game Fest live show, I said something about the sound. This was spot on. This was fantastic sound, fantastic presentation. The Velasco is a nice theater. We were a little bit parked. It was a little bit tight, but I really love how Ubisoft knows how to pull off a show. I really like that. I really like the live performance by the musicians."

"I really like that they put developers on stage. The human touch, the art, the way they – you can feel their art and their talent way better if they are there on a stage. And even if they are reading from the prompter, I think it's a nice way of doing it. And they're doing it in the home of the Americans who didn't know how to do it for both Summer Game Fest and Xbox Showcase. These French people know what they're doing."

"Yeah, and, you know, they also managed to handle the sort of, let's say, the more middling announcements quite well. We got that sort of like flashy and exciting trailer reels where it showed off all the live service games they got coming. You know, I think there was some that you know why they're putting more of an emphasis on them because they're newer like Skull & Bones and the Crew Motor Fest and X-Defiant. I don't think those necessarily hit as hard as you would. I mean, Skull & Bones particularly because that's a season that's already here. It's more like, just go check it out. That's kind of what they're serving the purpose of. But like X-Defiant, Little Teaser, Learn More July, the Crew Motor Fest, here's year two. Avatar. Avatar, exactly. So, you know, very much like a good balance between the future, the now, and then a little tease to the very far future in Prince of Persia and then also Anno, which looks good. I'm not really an Anno fan. I'm not going to touch much on it. But, you know, we've got a new Anno coming up."

"Yeah, it was a nice trailer as well. So perhaps that's a way to wrap this up. I mean, I would have loved to have a little bit of a surprise. I would have loved to see a teaser now that we got the teaser for Prince of Persia that's not going to show anything until 2026. A teaser for what the hell is going on with Splinter Cell or what the hell happened to Beyond Good and Evil 2. But, you know, if you're going to do the same as with Prince of Persia, I think you only have one card for that. You cannot use it three times. So that's it. Let's try to write this. I'm absolutely not going to climb over that because they'll kick me out of here in a heartbeat. We're sick on time today. Yeah, this has been Ubisoft though, so stay tuned for more on that, I guess."

"For our previews."
