Gaming Gossip - Episode 2: Our Expectations and Hopes for the Switch Successor

We chat about what we expect the Switch follow-up to offer, what we hope it will feature, and likewise when we expect the console to be announced and ultimately arrive.

"Hello everyone and welcome back to the second episode of what we're calling Gaming Gossip, our sort of talk show, our new sort of talk show thing where we bring together a bunch of people and we just chat about something that's happening in the game industry. Today we have a special episode, I say special, it's not really special, it's just different to the first one we did because we've got three people here today, not only is me and Alex here like we were last week but we've brought along David Caballero, the Spanish jefe, self-proclaimed Switch guru, Nintendo legend, whatever you want to call Dav, Dav's here, we're here to talk about some Switch 2 stuff. Before we get into that though Dav, how are you?
I'm fine, I'm fine. I like the Nintendo legend sort of nameplate. If you, if Rafa, you're behind the camera, if you can write down that as my new position that would be great but yeah I'm just, and I have been very close to the company, let's just say that for many years I started with magazines that were Nintendo only, both printed and online magazines so that's why I was pretty close to them in the beginning also with Gamereactor and very very fortunate to be enabled to for example meet and interview Shigeru Miyamoto and the Aonumas and the you know and the Sakurais and so I've been close to them so I kind of know their ways let's let's put it that way but I'm fine I'm fine how about you guys?
Yeah doing good I'm excited for this one because this one has well it can go anyway right you know we don't know anything really about the Switch 2 which is bizarre you know normally I say it's bizarre it's bizarre when you look at it compared to Xbox and PlayStation right you know we normally know a lot about these consoles and the lead up to them coming out Nintendo doesn't do that they like to announce the thing sort of near near to when it's going to come out and that's when we first get to know more about it and we haven't had that announcement yet now there are rumours right I was gonna say I just realized I've been like quite just like a lovely viewer of the of the conversation for the past few minutes but um I was I was gonna jump in and just say like Nintendo on that point of like they never sort of um give you much it's because they're always a bit of a wild card when it comes to consoles I find like an Xbox or a PlayStation you think there's going to be more power more and it's probably going to just plug into our homes TVs and then that's fine whereas Nintendo come out of the you know the wazoo and say here's a Wii U we don't know what it is find out what you know find out what you want to do with it and then they go here's the Switch yeah it might be the most popular thing you've ever seen or it might be a console that will put them in the back you know in the backwards for like the next three years and I think they learned a lot not only mentioned the Wii U I think they learned a lot from that from the announcement itself and I think they're gonna they learned also from the release of the of the machine itself the marketing was terrible I think it was only comparable comparable to to Xbox ones right so I it took them a long time to actually release and to explain the the product properly and even though it was very positive in the end because it was the the sort of the the origin or the or the first concept of the precursor to what the Switch became to be after evolving those concepts it was really a failure in in all regards and they learned a lot and then the Switch as you said was introduced in a much closer to launch time window so I think they learned from that and also the release was fantastic I don't I expect them to to try at least to try a comparable effort with with the Switch 2 or whatever they're going to call them to call it in the end right I know we we love Super Nintendo Switch but I don't think that's gonna happen I love that naming I just love it because it's it's of course full of nostalgia but I think they're gonna pull like it's gonna be like the Switch in terms of being very close to launch we we are going to to get to know what it is about and then I think in terms of software they it has to be a comparable effort but I don't think they can match what 2017 was with Breath of the Wild of course it was on the Wii U too but you know launch game Breath of the Wild and and Super Mario Odyssey for Christmas I don't think that's gonna happen and speaking about windows it was if I could read mention was in the fall then reveal was in January in January for a release on the 3rd of March so full reveal was in January so yeah well what are we looking at I don't know but it has to be I think the announcement and the reveal have to be Q1 no matter what because of course March 31st you will have you will have share your your plans for the full financial year and I think it's going to happen before that so March all bets on March right now right it does seem likely but talking about the Switch you know what do we expect from this console then do we do we think it's going to be sort of like what Nintendo did with I don't know for ham for example like the DS to the 3DS right where it's like a very similar platform slightly different in a way but in in many aspects it's the same console are we expecting it to be something similar to that or are we expecting like a significant change like we we had from the Wii U to the Switch well I think it's it's more like you said with the DS to 3DS which at first wasn't that successful I mean they they had the 3D gimmick thing but to me it was was amazing I was there you know E3 2010 if I'm correct the conference is over and then a lot of ladies from the Nintendo crew were holding the machine in their hands and it was the first time ever we were witnessing 3D with you know no glasses and it was it was it was something else but then in the in the longer run or at first for the Nintendo 3DS it it what the gimmick itself what wasn't selling the hardware it was the the catalog it was the games it was the franchises you know but in terms of hardware hardware I don't expect expect them to be a huge difference a huge difference now to make a huge difference from from these the thing is this is 2017 as we said and it's it's looking old in several regards and perhaps they are saving some ace up their sleeves in terms of you know playable thing that they've been doing all all the way from the Wii they they can't rely on on raw power alone they had they always came up with different ways to play new ways to play from the Wii all the way up to the Switch and but as you said this is this is hybrid right this is a console you can you can play on the go you can you can plug it on the TV so perhaps the secret sauce is provided by the dock that's the only thing I can I can think of that they have some additional hardware in there for for the experience to be different so for example it can push more what you put on TV and they can make you for example play with two screens once again as they attempted with the Wii U and then abandoned but other than that I think it's going to be very incremental it's going to be more and better hopefully I don't know what you guys think well I think that's like bang on though because I don't I think unlike what we saw from the Wii to its successor like I think I think people were kind of getting to the point with the Wii like we like the motion thing you know we like the motion systems that's cool being able to be very active with how you play games but yeah it's time for something new like at this point got the nan boxing basically yeah let's get back to Metroid and Zelda and being able to play these games on the controller and stuff but I think that was something that you could kind of feel coming by the time the Wii the Wii was coming to its end the Switch feels like they hit the jackpot with the platform and I don't I think it would be strange if they went away from it but at the same time if they do do like an upgrade of the Switch and this is like a Switch 2.0 we're all manifesting Super Nintendo Switch but it won't happen it's going to be probably like 15 years or something until they significantly transition away from the platform I guess if they ever do it but no I think that yeah I think we're going to see sort of like like like you say that sort of incremental improvement but I think that's all that people want they just want more power just to be able to play the games modern games in a way that they look good right because I think this is really seen at the end of this at the end of this generation especially like Pokemon right it's really ugly like you can't deny that people still laugh it up then yeah go on I'm one of them I'm one I'm one of the people that would still laugh up a Pokemon release every single time you know um they they feed me the slop and I take it but it's you always say like it's always nice to have more power and I hope that that's what happens with the Switch 2 I'd love for them to just do something completely out of left field but it seems like they are going to be sort of moving up like Gamecube 2 just out of nowhere just you know here you go guys but um no they're they're going to give us like a super upgraded version of the Switch which is good you know predictable but good I think is a lot of the I think if there's someone that is going to be like really wacky with something though it's going to be Nintendo because everyone else has been doing sort of by the numbers stuff for the past few years but I can't see them shooting themselves in the foot and getting entirely rid of the Switch I feel like that's just such a fumble as the kids say um that you know it's going to be it's going to be switched here but that's there's a risk as well I think I think it's a huge challenge for them same as it happened with the DS going from DS to 3DS to be successful with a console that is just more raw power so that's why I perhaps I'm just hoping for them to have that Nintendo idea that define of course the Wii U and the Switch the Switch the Switch sort of nailed it but it came it was it was an idea they came up with for the Wii U like people are going to play tower screens it was really pioneering in that regard it was it was actually a fantastic technology to send the the images to the Wii U game path with no lag that was amazing if you look into the into that and previous innovations they put the money and the R&D onto these onto gameplay innovations instead of trying to to compete with raw power which didn't work out for them since since the Gamecube flop right so I'm hoping for them to have this this ace up their sleeve but I can't see it and if I don't see it I think it's going to be a huge challenge it's about to be the the best selling console ever for them and even could become the best console ever like above the PS2 too even though that that's a very that's very optimistic right but but if that happens that's always the case you you can't replicate success in the next year how many families bought Nintendo Switch in the past one two years and what will be the reason for them to buy a new hardware when when when it's not just about the franchises right and and we we don't expect all the franchises to be ready at launch I actually don't expect other other than than Super Mario the new 3D Super Mario or Mario and Donkey Kong 3D game by Nintendo EAD Tokyo to be ready at launch unless Alex we get a new Pokemon to go with it I I only see that as the only potential combination one two punch that we can get from them to base their success on the software alone I don't I think elsewhere it's very tricky to sell a new 400 euro pound system to existing Switch users that is the key thing as well because I think Nintendo are facing a different battle than PlayStation and Xbox right you know PlayStation Xbox gamers to me come across as sort of more savvy to technology if that makes sense like they they go like you know we want 60 fps we want 4K graphics we want these things to you know yeah significantly improve what we confident and expect from gaming Nintendo it feels less about that to me like it's more of a family console right and because of that being the case it's those things are less important there are still a huge proportion of the Nintendo player base that would like those things don't get me wrong but when it comes to a Nintendo thing if you just gave them a more powerful console let's say let's say like the DS to 3DS you could play DS games or you could play Switch games on this successor then it's going to be very difficult to encourage these people to upgrade because they can do the thing that this console is already doing anyway so you have to in certain in a certain regard expect them to do this wacky thing and upgrade and change the format entirely because that's what Nintendo does to drive console sales but at the same time that would feel kind of weird because then you're alienating 150 million players essentially but what about then you know you've mentioned there Dav about um what's the next you know the Wii U sort of served as a way to sort of R&D for the Switch do you think we've been seeing that happen anyway with things like these wacky games like Labo and all that all these weird little things that we've seen in the past the Ring Fit I think they were smart in that um you know from the Wii U came the two screen concept and then it was fully portable fully fully handheld you could go anywhere and play out of the battery right so that was the Wii U but then they had to look back at the Wii and sort of keep the motion controls innovations and we saw that with the Joy-Cons and that makes the Switch you know sound it's not just the machine but also the the way you you detach the controllers and can play them in different ways so and they were smart in for example introducing the the IR sensor or the you know which was pretty much never used other than one two sweets the Wario games and the Labo so I think they will leave some doors open but I don't expect them to go crazy I think the Labo was an experiment was I think it wasn't a huge success the same way the ring fit adventure was as an incredible success and I think they will stick to motion controls in a way so I fully expect them to have just evolved with Joy-Cons in a way like we I expect them to be more ergonomic I think I think it's a pain when you have to to play Mario Kart like this and and use the items like these I think it's it's it's very difficult I understand it it's also for kids and I understand Japanese people normally prefer smaller peripherals we've seen that with sim racing they like the smaller wheels right so I understand that but I think they have many notes that they will have taken from the Switch time for example I think we need a d-pad I've been playing Mario vs Donkey Kong you have to Alex I don't know how how you felt with with the with the analog stick that's a prominently digital you know sort of control input and I expect them to fix this and the other way around I expect the the triggers to be analog again why did we lose that it was a matter of buttons for example I don't know I I don't know what happened but in on the Gamecube you have this huge long you know very precise analog like like this and you could control racing games or shooting games in a in a much more accurate way so I don't I don't know what the what the gimmick could be but incrementally I could expect those those improvements of course I we need them so what we think in them that it's going to be what what are we expecting from this console that is going to be a surefire inclusion then so like a better screen you know potentially you know maybe it plays games HD natively or something like that so more powerful hardware in it obviously I think something I'm very passionate about is not going back to the original screen size for the Switch where we had the big black bars around the outside that made tele from the 1980s like that was a bad decision so let's hopefully not see that again um as dad said that you know analog triggers and buttons and whatnot in that regard you know more responsive systems in that sort of area uh I have a gimmick idea go on I just I just came to me when dad was saying I don't know what the gimmick is this time and I was like what what is going to change the game as much as you know I should probably save this as a pitch for Nintendo because I don't think they'll have thought of it but have you ever thought about you know it's all for family it's all for fun right what if you could not only split the controller in your hand over someone else you can split the screen foldable foldable splitable screen that you give to your friend and can't function that I have no idea how that would work but I think if you're really going to like show up and say here's the Switch 2 it's completely different from the Switch you have something like that where you go where the guy like does the presentation with the Joy-Cons then he goes oh I brought my friend you know back in the day it'd probably be Reggie who they'd bring out Doug Bowser they bring out Doug Bowser and they go oh here Doug and they throw him the screen and then it slips on the floor and it crashes and everyone moves or whatever you can essentially connect together yeah or like a DS you can just play it in two yeah at the same time you would get the sort of Wii U and DS type of experience that we lost with the Switch because you can't have two screens and if the dock had that additional hardware that could potentially be done also with both the TV and the handheld screen slash screens I think it's interesting I think that I think the technology is there for the first time we've seen that with foldable foldable phones right it wasn't there before but they're always worried about it being you know weak or delicate or breakable but the technology is there now so perhaps instead of going full HD they they say hey let's split this in two and then we can you know suggest new sort of the experiences they've been experimenting with with the Wii U and the DS and some of them were amazing for example having the console folding like a book and enjoying hotel hotel desk I don't know why why did they remake another code I love another code I love Ashley but we wanted hotel desk right so that that's sort of as you said Alex for everyone for for all audiences experiences they could go back to that in a way that foldable phones aren't there yet because they're not widely adopted as of yet right so if you force that into your system you're making it widely adopted that would be amazing that would be the the gimmick right but the main thing then I think the problem and this is probably like the final point to talk about is the sweet spot between the power and price thing right because that's one of the biggest catches it's going to be with the Nintendo console is that it's a family console it has to be affordable to a wide array of audiences I don't think we're going to see this console sort of clocking in at that sort of price point as a ps5 and an xbox series x at launch because I don't think many people are going to look and pick it up so how are they going to get all this new technology and all this new hardware that we expect into this platform without it being massively over overpriced I think the one thing that we can say is that we're probably not going to see an OLED native version at launch maybe there'll be an OLED option I don't think we're going to get an OLED screen at debut but is there going to be other things that they're going to have to you know maybe come back on to to be able to hit this price point maybe storage size maybe it's just not that good on storage and you know you only get like 165 gigabytes something like that launch maybe that's a way to cut back on the cost you only get like because the thing is is does it have an ssd does it have this that and the other and the answer is probably no because if we're just looking at if the rumors are right and if it's just PS4 Xbox One level of hardware you don't need an ssd to run a lot of that stuff um if they're gonna I was just thinking of the ratchet and clank thing where it made PS4s like explode or whatever so let's hope they don't try and put stuff like that on there but uh I think that's a way that you could push it back but otherwise I don't know maybe it just is like 450 pounds and they say bye bye grandma you know but I doubt it's extremely tricky and we can only speculate because we don't know the specs and we probably won't know until it's released because they won't announce the specs when they rebuild the system right they will announce the concept so uh we have a preference with with the rogue ally and and the steam deck which by the way isn't full hd yet the ROG Ally is but the steam deck isn't because they are they're saving some some money on that too and the and the Lenovo Legion Pro right so they are all above 500 and I don't think I don't expect and I don't think Nintendo has ever gone gone so so high on price and it's only a few times they have been selling at a loss Nintendo 3DS being one so then they struggled because they they only sell games they they are all about games of course they they diversified in the in the in the past few years with licenses and and the universal deal the the theme parks and the and the movies and whatnot but they are about their franchises and their hardware and their games being playable on that hardware which by the way perhaps we are seeing a huge important announcement by by Xbox I don't know when this is going to be live but just imagine that there is something third party in there or perhaps a collaboration with Nintendo we don't know about that is also about to be announced but you know they are all about their own thing so they can't go that high and they can't go selling at a loss for a long time whereas Sony and Microsoft can do that because they run many other businesses that are even more important than video games to them so we'll see I think the Switch stayed expensive for a very long time they same as their games they have legs they don't need to cut the price down and they have the cash now so we'll see but the Nintendo Switch as of now it's 300 pounds or euros I think and then the the the lite version you can go down to I think 150 but close to 200 actually so what's the ballpark here I don't think they can go way above 400 I think 400 is pretty much what everyone expects here but then what are we going to get for that price when the ROG Ally and the others are giving you these performance which is more or less what would be nice right to get yeah like the performance of those devices but in a completely dedicated device to to squeeze the consumption and the power from it so that's the main point I think that's the main point if it's only an incremental sort of hardware update which was going to come when they all it did just just more beef into it but we expected it to be a little bit more powerful then they got rid of that because of the cheap crisis and and all that so with that being in mind then one final thing to have quick five question when do you expect the Switch 2 to debut if we expect a reveal by the end of this fiscal year that we're currently in when are we thinking that it's going to actually arrive yeah I think reveal has to be uh not March at the latest because they could wait for the announcement of the yearly results so that normally happens uh end of April beginning of May but I think that's the deadline I think it will have its dedicated sort of video thing not a Nintendo Direct just just like a trailer thing and I think that's going to happen in March because it's good timing and then you explain more with the yearly results right the what you expect to sell and forecasts etc I think it has to release this fiscal year which means before March 31st 2025 that being said I think we all expect it to launch this year I think that the Nintendo Switch is kind of dying we see the filler we see everything is remakes remasters and AA sort of side projects so I think they are all main main teams are working on AAA or big important like main main main franchises with that being said I don't think any franchise is going to be ready other than the 3D Mario this year so I expect them to release the console end of the summer or directly as Christmas huge Christmas push Christmas campaign sort of deal they don't do that they haven't been doing that since the Wii U I don't I don't I don't think that's their current nor we had we had PlayStation and Xbox I think PS5 was delayed in some countries and it was then early they were November yeah for when they eventually did debut them so I think it's a bit you know you money is died you don't want people you don't want to rely on on people's money left on Christmas for a new system you want them to buy games which is much much easier much more convenient so I think I think if we put this all together I think it has to be late Q3 very Q4 I don't expect them to to wait until Christmas so but I don't know this is a bet I am yeah I don't know we could talk about online system I think I think that's going to be a huge change but but all the time but anyway we'll know more about it soon we're expecting a we're expecting the announcement soon we're expecting another Nintendo Direct that's probably focused on software for the Nintendo Switch anyway relatively soon as well so there's loads of Nintendo news either way we're putting our money on Nintendo Switch 2 the super Nintendo Switch as we're all going to call it until they ultimately tell us differently we're expecting it to be arriving sometime in 2024 so stay tuned for that otherwise this has been the second episode of gaming gossip and we'll be back probably next week with something no doubt probably Xbox related talking about the big podcast that's coming out tomorrow with all the Xbox games coming to Nintendo right but take a look at the article at your local Gamereactor site if you want to to check out the 14 wishes or petitions that we are making about the Switch 2 thank you all for watching we'll see you all on the next one make a gen 5 remake you cowards"
