Virtual reality needs more original, dedicated projects, and more accessibility for players, and here we learn much more about the innovative but veteran approach of Polyarc with a free-to-play MOBA in the form of a VR board game. "We're at Gamescom 2023 and this is the last day and you know I love VR and I love Moss and I think VR should be about new fresh things specifically designed for VR so I was rather happy to see Glassbreakers and what you guys are trying to do here which is completely adapting the MOBA sort of board genre to VR so what's the main reasoning behind designing this sort of approach and now unveiling it after the two action-performing sort of puzzle games? Yeah yeah so the main thing is we're really excited about taking the tabletop genre to a new place we've always been a big fan of the tabletop genre in VR we think it's very made for it you can interact look at it look at the people in front of you in board games and we wanted to really bring that into VR because we think that's pretty special so early on in Polyarch we prototyped this game and we were really excited by the ability to see your opponent and interact with these small champions and so it's really been driving us as we've been developing Moss so it's been in the back of our minds and then recently we went into full production and started this and we're just really excited to take a different approach to a VR game than we have been previously moving into a free-to-play live service model and that will allow us to you know get closer to the industry and the community and build a community up and have the players help drive what our priorities are and what we're developing and so not only are we excited about the genre we're also excited about this type of a model because it's going to give us that opportunity to connect with players more and figure out together how we can make this game and this medium even better."
"Perhaps what do you think about the status of the medium itself you know this year of course PSVR 2 release perhaps it's not as big as we were expecting or not accompanied by so many games but you guys are going to be free-to-play which I think is rather interesting for everyone with a headset to be able to play so it's a perfect moment to be there with a free-to-play product for these to also help VR grow bigger."
"Great yeah I think the timing is perfect you know there are a lot of games out there and I think with a free-to-play game we're going to allow players to come in and try it out and explore it's going to bring a lot more people into the world of Moss because it's set in the same universe so I think doing this type of approach is going to allow us to get more closely involved with the community like I was mentioning earlier and then that will help us understand what the VR industry and the VR players are looking for with Moss you know we develop it and we have a story to tell and we release it and we love to hear how the players feel about it and how they feel about Quill with this game we're excited to hear where they want to take it and we think timing is great for that there's a you know lots of multiplayer games coming out we'll be releasing first our open beta on App Lab which is a great place for people to come and try a bunch of new games which is going to be next Tuesday the 29th people will be able to get in there and check it out and we're excited about that we think as the more people we can bring together and hear what they think is exciting that will allow us to push this genre and the medium forward."
"Alright that about the Mossverse and about the the model now let's talk about gameplay of course you are playing like a tabletop game you can you move yourself around how how do you guys use gestures to control the champions and I think it's three champions right so any sign of 1v1 so what can you tell us about the whole gameplay concept? Yeah so it's a 1v1 real-time battler at least that's how we're approaching it right now the game takes it's kind of has DNA from a couple different genres so it's sort of a new genre and that's what's great about VR is we can explore these types of things so each player will feel three champions the board in front of you is just a little bit longer than arm's reach but you can move yourself around it and it's hex based which might be like oh is that a turn-based game but no this is a real-time game and we get that affordance with VR the players will be able to just grab their champion with a simple trigger and tell them where to go the champion will run over and and do the attacking like with their AI behavior and then it creates some really interesting things you might be thinking it's a little that might be a little much controlling three champions it's already hard enough to control one well we've really boiled down it to make it easy to approach and try to reduce the cognitive load for players so that it's easy and the way that we do that is each champion has one ability it's sort of like taking a MOBA hero and splitting that all their abilities across multiple champions and that just helps it you know you only have to worry about one thing but it allows you a lot of flexibility and how you can compose your team the way that we make it a little bit easier for you to control a whole team as we've taken some of that inspiration from real-time strategies we have but combine it with VR so we have gestures that allow you to select your whole team and then move them around we have ways to just tell them to go back to the base and heal and you just throw your hand behind your back and release the trigger we want the controls to be quick responsive and intuitive and so far we're hearing some great things about it so we're excited for players to get their hands on it and they can get their hands on in on August the 29th already with their headsets no of course I'm not vsvr but but on their independent standalone and also PC VR right yeah so we'll be releasing our open beta early access on the 29th on the quest 2 you'll also be able to wish list it on Steam that day so we're a small team and we're developing platform by platform but if you're interested in PC you can wish list it and if you have a quest 2 you can get started on Tuesday that's sick looking forward to breaking the glass thank you so much for joining us thanks"
