Looking back at Human: Fall Flat and forward at new physics-based games by its creators at BIG Conference 2022

Tomas Sakalauskas was amazed in Bilbao to still be talking about his ragdoll indie success from 2016 and about how the game was perceived in different parts of the world, but No Brakes Games are now developing two brand-new, physics-based games, one of them in VR...

"Hi friends, we are at the BIG Conference in Bilbao and it's really nice how things come together because, you know, this was called Fan & Series Game Festival before and we had Fumito Ueda in the past and he chose as his favourite game of the year Human Fall Flat and it's really nice to talk to you today here at the same venue, so thank you so much for joining us."

"The game released in 2017, if I'm correct?
16 So, how do you feel looking back at all those human falling?
Well, actually, if you count the years, it's quite an old game and I'm still talking about something that I did way, way back but it was a crazy ride with the game, it started really small and today we are here."

"Actually, as we were talking yesterday casually, it really is interesting to me how the game is, you know, captivated very different types of audiences and how very different types of players try to, you know, make the game work differently.
So, what can you tell me about this, about how players try to play and how did you, for example, were so successful in Japan?
Yeah, different players play differently and you can see some trends in countries, so, for example, watching German YouTubers play was really funny because the chat is angry if a YouTuber does something differently than supposed to and you are not doing that right, so, yeah, but it's designed to play anyway."

"You want French players make comments about visual aspect of the game, they appreciate it and that's quite interesting because I learned modeling while doing the game, so I'm not an artist, my programmer art is appreciated by people who know art, that's really flattering.
Yeah, different people play it differently."

"And how did the game come to be? I know you are mostly into experimenting with physics.
Is that what you normally do to come up with new playable ideas?
Is that what you did back then and what you're doing now?
Yeah, in my free time I like to explore new concepts and mostly related to physics because with physics it's really emergent, you never know what will happen because if you script animation, you model everything and with physics even animation is totally unpredictable."

"Your character walks, he stumbles into something, he is pushed around, so it saves a lot of time for animators.
How would you say that technology and the evolution of physics technology in the past few years, coming from that game, how would you say it's evolved and it's helping you experiment with new things or perhaps being more detailed in what you can try out?
Unfortunately the physics engine is the same that I started the game on, it's not evolving too much because Unity has to support all the games that are made with that and for them to do some changes is really difficult because they will break compatibility and many developers will be really unhappy about that."

"So what I did now instead of using Unity physics, I take NVIDIA's physics version and it's open source, so basically I can modify the source code to do things that I want to do and we will have much more freedom for physics based experiments which we are not able to do in Unity for example."

"Anything you can disclose about what can we expect from No Break Games in the future based on these experiments?
Well nothing really specific, we are working on two projects, both are still undisclosed, both will be physics based, you will have to solve some puzzles as usual and one of them will be VR."

"And crazy ragdoll physics or we don't know about?
We don't know about that, but it will use really immersive interaction, physics based interaction with the world.
And finally what can you tell me about No Break Games and the studio structure that you have in both Tenerife and Vilnius?
So both studios are more or less independent, they work on their own projects and they have their studio heads and they take care of production, human resources, everything, so I can do physics experiments."

"But then we also have a technology team that is shared between the two studios and I mostly work with that team trying to make games run faster, do more and yeah.
Alright, thank you so much for your time Tomas and I hope that we keep seeing humans falling flat for many more years.
Thank you."
