UEFA maintains boycott on World Cup as FIFA did not meet conditions, increases pressure on Infantino

UEFA's boycott on the World Cup is still active despite FIFA cancelling their plans to sell off stakes of the competition.

UEFA maintains the pressure on FIFA and Gianni Infantino, and the boycott against World Cup still stands, as explained in a new statement sent on Thursday. That is despite FIFA announcing they were cancelling their plans to sell off stakes in World Cup and other competitions to private investors.

UEFA explained in the statement that the withdrawal of the plan was one of the conditions, but not the only one: they also asked for guarantees that they wouldn't try the same plan again. "First, the proposals to sell off the major competitions had to be withdrawn and secondly, assurances have to be made that such attempts to disfigure the game in this way will never be made again. These conditions have not been met."

"UEFA made it abundantly clear in its statement on Saturday that it has lost confidence in Gianni Infantino's presidency. That position holds", UEFA said, adding that "yesterday's announcement that some people employed by the FIFA President (and whose careers depend on his favour) agree with him changes nothing".

If UEFA maintains their boycott, no European national team would play for any FIFA competition, including men's and women's World Cups. At least, not until Gianni Infantino is gone for good, which could happen in the March 2027 elections if another candidate beats him. So far, very few people seem capable of doing it...
