During the 2019 Game Developers Conference (GDC), we caught up with Squanch Games to talk about the much-awaited Trover Saves the Universe, coming from Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland.

When speaking to Mikey Spano, art director at Squanch Games, and CEO Tanya Watson, we got a sense of the creative direction of the game, including an explanation behind the chairs.

"The chairs are our explanation for a seated VR experience, the game started out as a seated VR game and its grown so much bigger. Our sort of fourth wall breaking joke about that was to build a world where the entire culture evolved around sitting," said Spano.

Watson then expanded on this by saying that "we originally designed the game to be in virtual reality, there are moments that feel incredible in VR. It's 100% immersive, there's no UI. It's awesome with a headset but it's awesome without one".

This shows how much the strange and peculiar world of Rick and Morty rubbed off on this game. However, Trover Saves the Universe is so much more than just a weird experience, as the branching dialogue allows the game to be played with so many different approaches.

"If you're going to play the game start to finish, it is going to be around 7-8 hours but all in all we have around 20 hours of dialogue in the game, so there's a lot to explore," Watson elaborated.

Trover Saves the Universe is currently available for pre-order but will officially launch in May on PS4 and PSVR before hitting Steam and the Epic Store in early June.

Will you be jumping into the hot seat to try and save the universe?
