Squanch Games has revealed that Trover Saves the Universe - the game coming from Rick and Morty's co-creator Justin Roiland - is launching on PC via the Epic Games Store and Steam on June 4, with PS4 and PSVR users getting it on May 31.

"We just want to make super duper games dooood," says Justin Roiland, co-founder of Squanch Games.

The game sees you pursue Glorkon who has kidnapped your dogs and for some reason has put them in his eyes, using their life essence to destroy the universe. Partnering with the little purple Trover, you have to save the day, and of course expect plenty of weird comedy in this title, along with "morally questionable choices", combat, puzzles, and platforming. There are plenty of bizarre planets and characters to see as well, and you can upgrade both yourself and Trover with new abilities. You can even switch between TV/monitor and VR headsets whenever you choose.

The game will launch for £24.99 ($29.99 USD, €29.99) on all platforms, and you can pre-order now if you want to get in there ASAP. If you're at PAX East you can even play the game early at the Squanch Games and Limited Run Games booth.

Justin Roiland is also hosting a panel called 'Comedy in Games' on March 28 as well, running between 16:30 and 17:30 ET (20:30 to 21:30 GMT) in the Main Theatre, as well as being streamed on Twitch.

At the Game Developer Conference (GDC) last week we spoke to Mikey Spano and Tanya Watson from the studio about the game, and we heard a bit about how things operate, which you can also see in the gameplay within the interview, and the screens below.

"Trover Saves the Universe is a comedy first and foremost, so you're going on this adventure with Trover, you're the one directing everything that he does, and he's making comments about everything that you're doing as you're doing it," Watson explained. "So it's really about you and the decisions that you wanna make, and then Trover's kind of like begrudgingly along for the ride."

"He's kind of almost like your conscience, he's going to be commenting on everything that you do, he's interacting with the characters, so most of the time you're just sitting there silently watching as Trover is sort of saying what you're thinking, it's really great," Spano added.

This game can be played both in VR and outside of VR on your screen, and this is something we also asked about.

"We originally designed the game to be in virtual reality, which means that there are moments that feel really incredible in VR," Watson told us. "We wanted to play a lot with the sense of scale, with the size of the creatures, with the way that you move around in the environment, the way that it's just 100% immersive. You don't have any UI in the game, there's nothing really very gamey about what we've created - it's all in-world for that reason. It just so happens though that that is great whether you're in VR or not in VR, which is why we decided to put it out on regular TVs as well, because it's awesome even without a headset."

Do you like the look of Trover's adventure so far?
