When it comes to earbuds these days, the variety available on the market is truly plentiful. For the most part, the premium devices get all the talk, but Tronsmart has been in the business of providing a more cost-friendly alternative, with its own line of wireless earphones. I've tested one of these products before, and now today, I've had the opportunity to once again dive into Tronsmart's portfolio, with its latest device, the Onyx Ace Pro.

These earbuds are designed to be affordable and are without a doubt cheap when looking at the wider tech industry. But, despite this being the case, this little gadget doesn't skimp on great performance in places, and has genuinely wowed me with what it is bringing to the table. Here's why.

Tronsmart Onyx Ace Pro

First of all, the audio quality is pretty good. Don't expect anything on the level of AirPods Pro with its Spatial Audio baked in, but what the Onyx Ace Pro does offer is a very clear and defined audio profile, even at higher volumes, thanks to the Qualcomm chip that powers it. And whether you're listening to music or playing a video game, the two defined modes look to better your overall experience. The regular mode prioritises quality and enhances the auditory experience, whereas the gaming mode looks to focus on synchronising audio and video instead. Both can be switched between with a simple few taps on the left earbud, making it ever easier to go from playing Call of Duty: Mobile to listening to your favourite songs, which is super handy.

Then of course as you'd expect for earbuds these days, the Onyx Ace Pro does feature a dual mics system that looks to eliminate background noise and instead bolster your voice when on a call. The microphone is fine and simply works, but it's really nothing to harp on about.

To make up for the basic microphone, the Onyx Ace Pro has a solid connectivity system in place. Connecting the device to your phone is incredibly straightforward and then activating the device on a whim is as simple and fluid as are AirPods. Just open the case, connect the device through Bluetooth, and then whack the earbuds in whenever you want to listen to music or play games - it's that easy. And the wireless streaming system ensures that the audio being conveyed between your phone and the earbuds is seamless and without issues, and even works when you factor in a bit of distance as well. Ten metres between the buds and your phone seems to work without any issues in my experience.

While all of these are great features that make an affordable device desirable, the part that truly surprised me was the battery life. The Onyx Ace Pro seems to last forever on a single charge. I've used these earbuds for a couple of weeks, and only had to charge the case once. That's because each earbud can last for 6.5 hours on a charge, and the case itself can extend their range to 27 hours, which is really quite a formidable amount of time. Add to this the fact that charging the earbuds in the case to full power takes 90 minutes, and only two hours to get the case to full capacity, and you have a device that is really handy for long trips.

What I will say about the Onyx Ace Pro however, is that it isn't the most appealing device on the market. It's not ugly per se, but what it does feature is a design that is so minimalist and basic that it's almost a little boring. Sure, it's very light, has a small body, is IPX5 certified making it resistant to water and dust, but that doesn't change the fact that it doesn't quite have the same alluring appearance of other earbuds on the market. The shape and design is so safe and commonplace that it's hard to take much of a highlight from it.

Yet this doesn't change the fact that for an affordable device as is the Onyx Ace Pro, you get quite the complete and competent system. They're comfortable to wear, offer up great sound quality, have an incredibly lengthy battery life, and are straightforward and hassle free to set up and use. I think sacrificing a daring design for these bonuses is more than a fair offering, and for that matter, anyone who is looking to get a set of earbuds and doesn't want to break the bank should look no further than these.
