Toys R Us closing in the UK, 100 stores to shut their doors
The US, Spain and France set to follow.
After an extended period of uncertainty, Toys R Us is set to close down in the UK. The popular company is going out of business in the UK starting this week. 25 stores set to close today, with the rest set to shut their doors over the coming six weeks.
100 stores are set to close in the coming month and a half, then, and we're sad to report that more than 3,000 people are likely going to lose their jobs as a result. The administrators that have been in charge of the chain since February simply couldn't secure a buyer for the whole operation, and now it seems as though they've reluctantly switched their attention to selling off parts of the business, rather than the chain in its entirety.
The big hit is still to come, however, this time in the United States. There, more than 33,000 jobs could be lost if the company finally closes its 700 Toys R Us and Babies R Us stores. The Wall Street Journal reports that CEO David Brandon told staff about his plans to sell or close every venue. And that isn't all, with Spain, France, Poland and Australia set to follow thereafter. Brandon also confirmed that he wants to sell operations in Central Europe, Asia and Canada.
It's time to say goodbye to one of the brands that has made a genuine impact on most of our childhoods, and we wish those who lose their jobs find a speedy return to work.
