The last twelve months have been full of trips, events, interviews, presentations for the crew over at GRTV. We've handpicked our seven favourite shows of 2012 for your holiday viewing pleasure. Enjoy!
7. Journey - Austin Wintory Interview
Published: March 15
Filmed: GDC, San Francisco (March)
Well before the Grammy nomination and even before the release of Journey we caught up with composer Austin Wintory during Game Developer's Conference in San Francisco. In this rather lengthy talk we touch upon several interesting subjects including some of the lesser known games and his approach to scoring video games.
6. Randy Pitchford Interview
Published: June 1
Filmed: Nordic Game, Malmö (May)
We like it when we catch up with developer's who are not currently on a PR tour so we can talk a bit more freely about various subjects and this was one such occasion. During the Nordic Game conference in Malmö, Sweden this May we caught up with Gearbox Software's Randy Pitchford. He talked about the future for Duke Nukem, as well as Borderlands 2 and Aliens: Colonial Marines.
Randy Pitchford was a recurring theme during the summer on GRTV appearing a total of 4 interviews starting with this one - then paired with Brian Martel for a talk on Borderlands 2, a chat at Gamelab with David Caballero, and finally the all-access interview we did over at Gearbox Software.
5. Tony Hawk Pro Skater HD - Tony Hawk Interview
Published:
Filmed: GDC, San Francisco (March)
Skateboard legend Tony Hawk was on hand in a hotel room during Game Developer's Conference in San Francisco to hype up his latest video game - the HD remake of his first couple of Tony Hawk Pro Skater titles. We had been informed that the legend would be in town and we had some sort of appointment, but the interview was never really officially confirmed beforehand, so we sort of fell on it and well, the rest is as they say... history.
4. Dishonored - Harvey Smith Interview
Published: September 14
Filmed: Gamescom, Cologne (August)
Harvey Smith is a name that is revered by many of his peers, but perhaps he isn't the household name that say a Warren Spector or Ken Levine is. With Dishonored, where he served as co-creative director with Raphaël Colantonio, perhaps Smith will rise to the same level of recognition. In this lengthy talk with Gillen McAllister we learn much about the development of the game.
3. Sleeping Dogs - Treasure Hunt
Christofer Olsson (Gamereactor Sweden) and unknown actors
Published: February 17
Filmed: Hong Kong (February)
And now for something completely different. During a press tour to Hong Kong early in the year, our Gamereactor colleague Christofer Olsson was treated to a weird (and maybe wonderful) as Square Enix had set up a Sleeping Dogs themed treasure hunt in the city for the various attending journalists to take part in. It's definitely one of the strangest things we filmed during 2012.
2. The Last of Us - Jacob Minkoff Interview
Published: August 1
Filmed: E3, Los Angeles (June)
Yes, we do enjoy slightly longer interviews at the GRTV offices and one such interview we took a bit of extra time putting together was the one we did with Naughty Dog's Jacob Minkoff at E3. We met Jacob at E3 one year earlier to talk about Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception and we were thoroughly impressed by his facial hair. After finishing that game Jacob went to South America, shaved his facial hair (to avoid any unnecessary facial hair related incidents), and he had now started to grow it back to its former state. Facial hair aside, this was an interview we were particularly happy with during a week where it's hard to separate one interview from the other as they all sort merge into one big ocean of interviews.
1. Doom, Oculus Rift and John Carmack
Published: July 27
Filmed: E3, Los Angeles (June)
This is really a two parter, one where the John Carmack built VR Helmet that would later emerge as Oculus Rift is being demoed, and another straight forward interview with the programming savant that is Id Software's John Carmack. This two parter really has it all, Gillen moving around in ways we'd thought we'd never see, techno babble and well, Doom.
