Hinterland Games has taken their sweet time perfecting the sandbox survival gameplay of The Long Dark on Steam Early Access and via Xbox Game Preview. In fact, it originally launched in Early Access 2.5 years ago. Now, the studio is finally getting ready to launch the story mode, now known as Wintermute, as The Long Dark version 1.00 is set for release on Steam, Xbox One, and (just announced) PS4 on August 1st.
Apart from the sandbox mode which has been available in Early Access, Wintermute (formerly known as Story Mode) will see its first two episodes released as part of 1.00. These amount to 6-10 hours worth of gameplay with the subsequent three episodes set to launch in 2017 and 2018. It may also be worth noting that Wintermute is already being called "season one", so after these five episodes it would seem Hinterland plans on doing more story content.
The Long Dark, has been very successful in Early Access / Xbox Game Preview selling a whopping 1.25 million copies over the course of 2.5 years. The price has been set at $19.99 (USD), but will increase later this month to $34.99 (USD). So now might be a good time to pick it up if you've been holding off.
