This week many game developers gathered in Malmö, Sweden to participate in the Nordic Game conference, and among them was Gen Design's Fumito Ueda. He offered some thoughts during his keynote on where the studio wants to go next, and he's apparently interested in going back to the open world style we saw in Shadow of the Colossus.

"I cannot talk about the details, but... Shadow [of the Colossus] came out of the experience with ICO, [going] from a closed world to open world. When I completed Shadow, there was a moment where I wondered if I wanted to go around an open world again, and maybe I should go back to a more closed space, spending a more intimate time with something in that space. That became the starting point for The Last Guardian.

"Now I've completed The Last Guardian and spent so many years in that game, maybe I may go back to the Shadow-type environment."

It's obviously little to go on for us yet, but do you like the idea of opening up the game world after having played the more linear The Last Guardian?

Thanks, Games Industry.

REVIEW. Written by Ricardo C. Esteves

"Unlike many game worlds, which seem to have been built to serve gameplay, the setting here feels organic and plausible."
