The delicate job of bringing back Age of Empires

The Definitive Edition will improve much but still offer that "mess of barbarians" rather than formations.

Recently at Gamescom we talked to creative director Bert Beeckman about brining Age of Empires back with the Definitive Edition (launches October 19).

Beeckman detailed how the game is a mix of old and new as things like visuals and soundtrack (re-orchestrated) have been redone, and the unit count has been raised to 200. But still, they want to maintain some of that old feel.

"It's still Age of Empires 1, so all the people feel that clunkiness is part of it", says Beeckman. "You can't make it full formations and all that stuff, that's Age 2 stuff, but Age 1 we still consider it's a mess of barbarians that just have a go at it."

Sadly, Beeckman was not allowed to say anything about the future plans they've got for the franchise with more definitive editions and eventually Age of Empires 4.
