The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics is looking to offer "a little extra lore to dig into"

We spoke with En Masse Entertainment's David Whitfield about where their upcoming strategy game fits into the Dark Crystal universe.

Netflix released their prequel series to the 1982 classic film The Dark Crystal last week, bringing the tale of Thra into the modern age. Connected to The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance series and acting as a lore buff in places to the show, a strategy game called The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics is launching later this year. To get an understanding into the title and to see how it fits into the Dark Crystal universe, we spoke with David Whitfield, product manager at En Masse Entertainment at Gamescom this year, asking him about how the two are connected and what it was like creating the title.

"The game will follow along the same plot [as the Netflix show] but then there's also a lot of opportunities when certain characters may leave the show for a little bit and come back episodes later, you'll get to see what happened to them while they were gone, we're calling it season plus plus. It's a little extra lore to dig into."

"It has been a really great partnership, we've worked closely with Netflix, the showrunners and then the Henson studio, just to make sure that we are capturing the spirit and the appearance of the characters and the story accurately. We actually went to Henson studios and the creature shop with some of the artists from BonusXP, to take some pictures of the clothing and of the puppets, to make sure all the details were accurate, and everything looked right."

Later on, we asked Whitfield about how the game will play, looking for an insight into what makes this strategy title so unique. "The developers, BonusXP, are a lot of strategy veterans. Their team is built up of people who have worked on a ton of different strategy games; the original Civilization, Age of Empires 2, Halo Wars. So, when the opportunity came around to work on Dark Crystal, with the lore and the huge fantasy world and all the races and characters. It seemed like a great opportunity to make a good tactics game."

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics is set to launch later this year on all platforms.
