Tencent wins $2.9 million against Mobile Legends developer
Popular game in South East Asia likened to League of Legends.
Tencent, the parent company of Riot Games, has won 19.4 million Chinese yuan (RMB) (or about $2.9 million USD) against Shanghai Moonton Technology Co., the developer of Mobile Legends, according to DotEsports.
Initially, Riot - which is owned by Tencent - sued Moonton for copying League of Legends for two of their games: Mobile Legends and Magic Rush. That case was dismissed not long after on grounds of forum non conviens, according to law journal Forham, meaning it was dismissed because there is another jurisdiction or court who could hear the case more conveniently. In this case, in Shanghai. Tencent, therefore, launched a new lawsuit against Moonton there instead.
While not so popular in the West, Mobile Legends has a big community in Southeast Asian markets like the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, and so on. It was released before Arena of Valor (or Strike of Kings or King of Glory in other regions) which gave the Shanghai-based developer a strong foothold on the market, even allowing it to dominate it.
We have contacted Moonton and will update you if they get back to us.
