Despite good sales the scores disappointed.

Mafia III was released last month by developer Hangar 13 and it performed well sales-wise, although it didn't get the critical reception that fans would have hoped for. Publisher Take-Two has now weighed in on the scores that the game got in a recent earnings call.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick explained: "In terms of the reviews and scores, it was sort of an odd anomaly. The scores were lower than we would have liked. But there are a lot of stellar reviews. I think the most prominent reviewers really loved it and recognised that what we're doing here, from the story, art, character, and excitement perspective is really unmatched in the marketplace. So I think we and our competitors are seeing some anomalies in the review system, but we take them as they are and we don't argue with it."

The game shipped 4.5 million units, so we can rest assured that there will probably come a sequel at some point, regardless of the review scores. Hopefully the development team for the next one will take the criticisms to heart and make something spectacular. What did you make of Mafia III?
