At the recent Starstream event, we sat down backstage with Warren Spector, studio director at OtherSide Entertainment and lead developer on the upcoming System Shock 3, to learn more about how the game is coming along and his thoughts in general.
One of the first things he said to us is that they're still in the "concept phase", where they're trying to "figure out their dream game".
Unfortunately, to avoid overpromising and underdelivering, he refrained from telling us too many of his ideas. On announcing the game so early and taking feedback from fans: "I like talking about games early and bringing fans into the backstage area, I think it's a nice thing to do. As a gamer myself I always like to know the inside story, about how games are made and all that stuff. It's usually the publisher and partners who say don't talk too much but in this case, nobody's told me to shut up. It's just a little too early to be talking too much, especially when you're trying to do some things that no-one in the world has ever done before. Which I always try to do; one thing that nobody in the world has ever seen before is one of my rules. And we've got one and it's crazy, but I don't know if it's going to work, so I want to keep quiet about that sort of thing. But I hope to engage with fans more, and earlier this time around."
That's a big claim, to want to do something nobody has ever done before. The field is wide open for speculation, but unless his tune has changed in the last couple of years, it won't be VR related if this interview back in 2015 is anything to go by.
One thing is for sure: Despite being so early in development, with Warren Spector at the helm, System Shock 3 is looking promising. What revolutionary new ideas do you want to see? Let us know down below.
