Star Wars: Galactic Racer's game director talks embracing glup shittos: "I didn't even know who Ben Quadinaros was until like two summers ago"
Star Wars: Galactic Racer packs some deep cuts and beloved references for fans who follow podracing like it's a real sport.
Star Wars: Galactic Racer might not just be about podracing, but it does feature in the game, taking us back to what may be the biggest glup shitto convention in all of Star Wars. If you're not aware of the term glup shitto, it's an internet meme made to poke fun at Star Wars' near-endless roster of odd little guys that usually end up getting brought back for cheap nostalgia pops. Even if the original joke wasn't made with the purest of intentions, the team working on Star Wars: Galactic Racer is embracing glup shittos, giving people the chance to see all their favourite podracers again.
"I had to look this up some weeks ago," said game director Matt Webster when I asked if he knew what glup shitto meant. "It's very interesting because Star Wars has been with us for so long. And in different ages, I suppose, from a generational perspective, we've all got our own first entry point into Star Wars."
"It took me by surprise a little bit when we announced this game. the depth of feeling of nostalgia for pod racing and for the characters of episode one, the pod racing in particular. I mean, I didn't even know who Ben Quadinaros was until like, I don't know, two summers ago where for some reason it blew up on TikTok. But there's a lot of love for the characters in Star Wars," Webster continued.
Sebulba also features in the game, both as a podracer and a racer in the main campaign, which is set just after the original trilogy. Star Wars: Galactic Racer isn't just relying on nostalgia, though, as it's made new characters along with its deep cuts, such as my personal favourite Biddy Blas, who is going right in the glup shitto catalogue within my brain.
