It's no secret that Ubisoft were developing Star Trek: Bridge Crew to support VR, but at their E3 press conference David Votypka, Senior Creative Director of Ubisoft Red Storm, unveiled a new trailer showing it off.

The trailer depicts the USS Aegis and allows you to have "your own Star Trek experience in a virtual world", as phrased by Star Trek legend Levar Burton.

Burton then joined Aisha Tyler on stage in order to really drive home the appeal of the game, emphasising that there was no longer a need for imagination anymore as this was the game to place players in a truly immersive version of the Star Trek universe. He went on to say that teamwork was key, no one position being more valuable than any other. He then joked that it was weird for him to give the orders rather than receive them as he previously did in character while acting in the series.

Bridge Crew is being developed for HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and PlayStation VR by Red Storm Entertainment (mostly known for their work on Tom Clancy franchises). It is set in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek universe and supports four players who can take the role of captain, tactical, engineering, or helm officer aboard a starship called Aegis. The player travels to an uncharted part of space called The Trench in order to find a suitable new home for the population of Vulcan.

VR headsets and their hand controllers allow players to scan for foreign objects, activate the warp drive, issue commands in combat, and much more. Red Storm's creative director David Votypka also hints that tough choices may be in store for the player:

"It's up to you if you want to try the Kirk approach or be more methodical. The game is more about how you and your crew approach situations. It's not binary. Is it more important to save the Vulcan scientists or rescue everyone on the planet? It might be too difficult to do both. It's just like the show. There's not any one right answer."

Star Trek: Bridge Crew is due to arrive on HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and PlayStation VR this autumn.

REVIEW. Written by Kalle Max Hofmann

"On the one hand, there's the feeling that this is a dream come true, on the other hand, the dream is short-lived and limited."
