Star Renegades just got a Gamescom trailer this week to highlight what they call their "2DX" style, and we actually caught up with lead designer Garry Seto from Massive Damage to hear more about the title at the show in Cologne
"Star Renegades is a JRPG roguelike. We've kind of tried to mash together a lot of genres," he said. "If you've played Halcyon 6 before you'll know we like taking different inspirations from different genres and put them into one game. We've kind of done the same thing here."
"So JRPGs are usually very long. We've tried to condense that experience into a roguelike experience where you're run is only two to three hours, but unlike traditional roguelikes, you actually care about these characters. They'll develop, you can even have relationships - we have a relationship system whereby sometimes, if you get all the way to the end of a relationship, you can actually unlock progeny for them, so they'll have children."
Seto also talked about 2DX as well, which is "kind of 2.5D with a lot of modern effects and visual effects like post-processing and particle systems to make it look a lot more modern than it was before."
Will this fusion of genres work?
