Spike VGAs: The Announcements

The Spike Video Game Awards aired this weekend, with a horde of new announcements, screens and trailers. We round up everything to bring you the comprehensive list of all you need to know.

The Last of Us


Naughty Dog's new game opened up the Spike TV Video Game Awards on a high note, and outshone wonky celebrity appearances and the overall shoddiness of the Spike TV production. Fresh off three massively successful Uncharted games, Naughty Dog, are taking on another popular film genre - the postapocalyptic/zombie flick. Whether it's a Dead Island with proper storytelling and a decent plot, or a zombie filled Uncharted with escort missions - The Last of Us - is something a bit rare these sequel ridden days - a brand new original platform exclusive concept.

Naughty Dog co-president Evan Wells posted the following quote on the official Playstation blog.

"The Last of Us is a genre-defining experience that blends survival and action elements to tell a character driven tale about a modern plague decimating mankind. Nature encroaches upon civilization, forcing remaining survivors to kill for food, weapons and whatever they can find. Joel, a ruthless survivor, and Ellie, a brave young teenage girl who is wise beyond her years, must work together to survive their journey across what remains of the United States."

It's looks absolutely stunning, by the way.

Command & Conquer: Generals 2


A couple of years back EA made the decision to close down their RTS studio at EA Los Angeles, and it felt like the second death of the Command & Conquer series (the first being the closure of Westwood Studios in 2003). Now Bioware Victory (formerly Victory Games) are in charge of the franchise, and their first project was revealed at VGA as Command & Conquer: Generals 2. The first game was released back in 2003 on the heels of the closure of Westwood Studios, and developed by EA Pacific, so it feels like a fitting way to begin the third age of C&C.

Due out in 2013, the game makes use of the powerful Frostbite 2 engine (Battlefield 3), and it's easy to tell that destruction is going to be a central focus on the game. The campaign will play up the multiple perspectives of both the army and the terrorists (hopefully in a non-predictable fashion). So far the game has only been announced for PC, and hopefully the developers will stay away from mistakes such as streamlining it too much in the hopes of attracting the console audience.



Gears of War developer goes Team Fortress? You'd imagine so given the brief reveal trailer for Fortnite, the new title from Epic. Cartoon-hue visuals as a group of survivors try and outlive an attack by zombified ghouls that look more comedic Ghostbusters than Evil Dead flesh-munchers.

But then its shows an arcade flair that isn't that far removed from the boisterous licks of Bulletstorm, and the gameplay, mixing RTS-style fort building during the day, and team-based defensive shootouts to protect the outpost during nighttime attacks feels like a tongue-in-cheek take of Gears of War's Horde Mode.

Nothing else has been announced nor confirmed for the title, though Epic's Lee Perry who is heading development, dropped some gameplay hints on Twitter account that suggest that the building aspect will be a lot more in-depth, while character and weapon upgrade systems were likely.

Epic's track record has proven its brought a high-degree of polish and quality to its ideas, so it goes without saying Fortnite will be worth watching as more information comes to light.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengence


To think its been over two years since the MGS offshoot was first debuted via a vague teaser trailer at E3. Now we've a new title, new direction and more importantly new developer, as Platinum Games has taken over control of the game's development.

Actually, maybe new direction is more important: the game's embraced the heavily unrealistic anime-stylings so iconic of Platinum's previous work. Wall-runs, superhuman feats (Raiden tossing a Metal Gear Ray in a wrestling-type swing) and streams of dialogue inherently cheesy and abstract at the same time. Bullet time slash attacks, letting you make soldiers into mince-meat, recalls Dynasty Warriors for its cut count.

The reasons for the shift of developer (Kojima Productions is still producing) have reportedly been due to the game nearly being cancelled in its original form, as the original studio it didn't constitute enough for a full-scale release.

It's an obvious shakeup for fans who'd expected a straight-laced take on the future battlefield, but if reports are to be believed, then at least the title is to see light of day. And if anything, it'd be interesting to see another studio's take on the much-respected franchise.
