Sony has revealed some interesting end-of-year financial results, confirming this year as the fourth in five where the electronics giant has recorded a significant loss.

Despite an increase in sales and operating revenue (to the tune of 14.3%) thanks to the launch of PS4 and a boost in smartphone sales, this year the company has leaked ¥128.4 billion / $1.26 billion, three times the loss of the previous year.

Net sales rose nearly 5% (to around $75 million), with games in particular continuing to provide a positive source of income for the company, increasing 38.5% year-on-year to ¥979.2 billion / $9.6 billion.

Sony actually shifted 14.6 million consoles (PS2, PS3 and PS4) in the last year, with 3.7 million in Q4 last year. PS4 has sold 7 million units as of April 6. PS Vita only managed to sell 700k units in the same period of time. In fact, all portable hardware sales dropped, from 7 million to 4.1 million units.

Overall hardware and software sales numbers were up, with 91 million pieces of hardware sold alongside software sales of 374 million units.

Some of the loss can be attributed to Sony's withdrawl from the PC hardware market, and the company is also expecting a potential loss next year as they continue to restructure the organisation.
