Sonic Mania announced for PC and consoles

Sonic returns to 2D next spring.

Sega revealed on late on Friday that Sonic Mania will be joining the new Sonic the Hedgehog project for a 2017 release, along with a second season of the animated series.

Sonic Mania sees a return to 2D for Sonic, with the same pixel-style art from the original game as well. Iconic Acts and Zones from the first games like the original, Sonic CD and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 are also reimagined in Sonic Mania, with new ones also being added along with new bosses too.

Developed in collaboration with PagodaWest Games, Sonic Mania will be digitally release in spring 2017.

"Sonic Mania was born out of our fans' love of the classic Sonic 2D platform games," Takashi Iizuka, Head of Sonic Team, said of the game. "This type of collaboration is a first for SEGA and we hope everyone will be both surprised and delighted by this title. Sonic Mania has been a passion project for the entire team and we look forward to sharing more details about it later this year. Having the game actually playable at the event itself tonight was testament to the dedication of the team behind it".
