In April the Belgian gaming commission waded into the ongoing controversy surrounding loot boxes in games by deciding that they were in violation of their gambling laws, and subsequently banned them. Now we're starting to see the ramifications of this decision.

According to Engadget, Square Enix has had to remove three of their mobile games from the Belgian market - Mobius Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Union X, and Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia - because they don't follow the new regulations. It's not only mobile games that are affected by this, however, as Guild Wars 2 also had to be removed from sale too.

It'll be interesting to see how this affects the gaming industry going forward, especially if more countries decide to follow in Belgium's footsteps. The Netherlands is just a few steps behind, and the UK is keeping an close eye on the situation.

Is this a good step by Belgium?
