Skyrim Special Edition was announced at Bethesda's E3 showcase and after the show one Twitter user asked Pete Hines, Vice President of PR and Marketing at Bethesda, whether the game will be compatible with current mods.

Hines simply responded with "basically, yes", confirming that the new game will support existing mods. 'Basically' may indicate something like a bit of extra work that needs to be done before it can happen, or that maybe not all mods will work, but it does seem confirmed nonetheless.

Update

Also via a Twitter question from the same user, Global Community Lead at Bethesda Matt Grandstaff confirmed that the remaster will use an updated, 64-bit engine just like Fallout 4. This means the remaster will need a 64-bit version of the Skyrim Script Extender to allow mods to act beyond the original confines of the engine. Once that's in place, though (which is likely considering it was done for Fallout 4), modders can improve upon it as they wish.

Skyrim Special Edition is due to arrive on PC, Xbox One and PS4 on October 28.
