In the latest Inn-Side Story, a series of dev diaries detailing Rare's Sea of Thieves, Software Director Andy Dennison and Senior Software Engineer Mark Lucas both talk about the challenges they face when designing the oceans in the game.

Balance between dynamic control and looks is important, they say, and the water aesthetic they are trying to achieve is based on Hollywood movies. They start with a photo-realistic base and then add on top of that, Dennison citing the appeal of the water is from the way the light reflects off it, both in night and daytime. Visibility is also key and determined by shadow, light and clouds which can all either hide or reveal enemies.
