Ryzom, the small indie MMO with a long and chaotic history, is shifting to a freemium payment model next week - similar to what games like Lord of the Rings Online and Champions Online have done before. The game used to have a 21-day free trial, which restricted you to the beginner island, but those restrictions are now being lifted.

Starting next week, "players that create a new account can play Ryzom without time or place limits. Instead, free trial accounts are now limited to a maximum level of 125 in all different skills, enabling everyone to sample all aspects of Ryzom and to discover what makes this MMO unique. When you reach level 125 in a skill you can still continue playing, but you will gain no more experience points."

The freemium model has worked wonders for MMOs that have adopted it in the past, but it remains to be seen how it will work in Ryzom. Check out the official website if you want to learn more about the patch for the MMO that is like no other on the market.
