Brad Sams of Thurrott wrote a report back in July of 2018 that talked about Project Scarlett way before its official reveal by Microsoft at E3 this year, and in that same report we also heard about a cloud-based console. Sams has now spoken in a new video about this same machine, which he thinks is still on the cards.

By this, Sams explains that rumours say it's still being "actively developed", but had nothing to share on a release window. This is set to be a "low-power, low-latency device" to connect directly to xCloud, Microsoft's streaming service that they've been showing off for a few months now, like in the video below where Inside Xbox host Julia Hardy plays Forza on a phone:

This is compared to Stadia's controller that connects straight to their servers, except Sams says this concept would see the console connect to xCloud, while you use an Xbox controller to play. Sams also speculates that this could undercut Stadia's price, and tells us that this would handle the computing for moving characters in the world, with the rest of it being streamed via xCloud.

With Scarlett being revealed as a meaty option for those after high-end tech (it offers 8K and 120 FPS after all), perhaps this will be the much cheaper alternative for players. Sams also talks about Lockhart in the video too, which sits somewhere in between.

He also makes clear that he hasn't heard that it's shipping yet, just that it's being worked on still.

Would you like to see this become a reality?
