Pearl Abyss; "Eventually, the game content will be similar across platforms"

We spoke with Pearl Abyss about their choice to bring Black Desert Online to PS4.

When we were at Gamescom this year, we spoke with Pearl Abyss to talk about their decision to bring Black Desert Online to PS4. The MMORPG is currently out on PC and Xbox One, so bringing it to PS4 was almost inevitable but are there any differences?

"The PC version and the console version are a little different but there aren't many differences between the Xbox and PlayStation 4 version" said Jeonghee Jin, Head of the Pearl Abyss, US Office. "The content will be almost the same eventually between Xbox One and PS4 version but because we start with a smaller amount of content on PS4 and the order of the updates is a little different, the combination of the content and features over time might be a little different. It will give players a different feeling as to their gameplay experience but eventually, the game content itself, will be similar across the platforms."

To further expand on this point and to highlight another unique feature between console and PC versions, Kwangsam Kim, producer of Black Desert Online for console said; "There's a difference between the PC version and the console version. Basically, this game is the same, it has the same content, if there is something in the PC version, it will be in the console version too, but it is different to the point of view. In the PC version, it feels like a MMORPG, players play a top down or long-range camera but on console, we make it feel like an action game, nearer to the character and it controls like some kind of action game. It is the same content, but it feels slightly different.

Now that Black Desert Online is a multi-platform experience, we also wanted to know whether we'll see shared progress or cross-play. Kim spoke about the matter saying, "We are not doing cross-play at the moment but when there are more content updates released over PS4 and if the content catches up with the Xbox One content. Then it's probably time for us to start considering that, so, there is no confirmed plan about cross-play."

When asked about a potential Switch port, Kim simply replied with, "sorry, I can't tell you yet." Maybe that can lead to some speculation but for the time being we'll have to settle for a PS4 version.

Are you going to play Black Desert Online on PS4?
