Nintendo has announced an increase in Wii U sales in recent months, but has conceded that, despite the recent surge in hardware sales brought about thanks the console's recent price cut, the company are still a long way off meeting their target of 9 million consoles sold for the year.
The platform holder also revealed that they've sold just 460,000 units worldwide in the six months leading up to September 30 (300,000 in the last three months, 160,000 in the three month period before), leaving lifetime sales at just 3.91 million. Overall an operating loss of ¥23.28 billion was revealed, with net sales totaling ¥196.5 billion. The company did manage to post a profit, although they admitted that was down to a favourable depreciation of the Yen, leading to "exchange gains".
Key first-party titles such as Pikmin 3 and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD have certainly helped things, and the company are looking forward to games like Super Mario 3D World to drive further software and hardware sales in the months ahead.
On the positive side, the 3DS continues to thrive. 3.89 million hardware units were sold during that period, and 27.38 million software units (of which Animal Crossing: New Leaf was the star performer, selling 2.49 million units worldwide). Since its launch, the handheld system has sold 34.98 million units.
