Earlier this week it was confirmed by Nintendo Japan that they had stopped producing Wii consoles, by an announcement on their website that simply stated: "manufacturing has ended."
More recently it was confirmed that the console's discontinuation in Japan won't have any bearing on its availability elsewhere. Speaking to Gamespot, a Nintendo representative said: "The announcement that the Wii console has been discontinued is specific to Japan. There is no change in the status of Wii in the United States, and it is available for purchase this holiday season."
The Wii has sold more than 100 million units during its lifetime, and will likely remain the company's best selling home console (only the Gameboy and the DS have sold more units), as the Wii U - the Wii's successor - continues to struggle to make an impact on the market.
