Using a complicated phishing scam, some Xbox Live users have, according to reports, had their virtual pockets picked.
Tabloid paper The Sun broke the story today, revealing that gamers had accidentally "let criminals access accounts and..... take small amounts from credit cards over several weeks - making them hard to detect".
Using this time consuming approach, online thieves were able to make off with millions.
Earlier this year PlayStation accounts were victim to an attack by hackers, resulting in the PlayStation Network being down for a considerable period of time, so this is not the first time that gamers have been targeted.
Xbox Live users will be relieved to know that, in this case, the system itself hasn't been hacked and that these latest incidents are down to individuals releasing confidential information when offered the chance to get free Microsoft points. Some victims of the scam have allegedly had as much as £200 stolen from them.
With Sony and now Microsoft experiencing problems with online security - or an apparent lack of - it is becoming an increasingly large subject of worry for both publishers and gamers. What concrete solution there is will have to wait until we hear a response from Microsoft.
For now, those worried about using credit cards in online transactions should remember you can still purchase pre-paid points card from your local retailer to use online.
