Microsoft's Yusuf Mehdi has spoken out about the reaction from gamers regarding used-game and "always-on", describing the resulting backlash to the platform holder's new policies as "kind of as we expected."

In an interview with ArsTechnica Mehdi said: "This is a big change, consumers don't always love change, and there's a lot of education we have to provide to make sure that people understand."

"We're trying to do something pretty big in terms of moving the industry forward for console gaming into the digital world. We believe the digital world is the future, and we believe digital is better."

The Microsoft man talks about the benefits of the switch to digital, and while that might not appeal to everyone, it certainly is where the industry is heading in the long term. Have they jumped the gun and generation too early? That remains to be seen.
