Will Blizzard announce Overwatch 2 at BlizzCon 2019?

Hero shooter Overwatch launched back in 2016 and immediately proved that Blizzard, a studio formerly renowned for its RTS games and action-RPGs, could make pretty much anything they put their collective mind to.

Since the first game's successful launch, Blizzard has constantly tweaked and added to the roster, refreshing the lineup with new heroes and launching seasonal events to keep things fresh. The game's growing esports scene only helped to maintain general interest. And so it went.

Three plus years is a good stint at the top, and now it seems as though a refresh is in the works after a report over on ESPN seemed to suggest that Blizzard is working on the next iteration of Overwatch. Apparently the game will be revealed next week at BlizzCon (which, frankly, makes a lot of sense), and it will include a new PvP mode as well as PvE features.

Apparently the outlet has spied documents relating to the game that indicates that a new hero is coming, as well as a new PvP game mode called "Push", which will take place on a new map based in Toronto.

According to the same report, "Hero talents and in-game items are coming to Overwatch 2 PvE, and one of the missions will be a four-player story experience set in Rio de Janeiro."

One thing that isn't laid out with any certainty is the name of the game. It was originally suggested that it would simply be Overwatch 2, but the report's author added that "it may very well not be titled 'Overwatch 2' and instead will be a variant of Overwatch Chapter 2."

With BlizzCon set to launch on Friday, November 1, we don't have long to wait before we find out what Blizzard has cooking in the oven. Given the fallout from last year and the poorly-received announcement of Diablo Immortal, we're expecting the company to come out guns blazing, and an Overwatch successor would certainly be a crowd-pleasing announcement.
