Microsoft Technology Licensing - a fancy word for a Microsoft Department that creates technology with the intent of selling the license for it to other companies, has recently filed patent for what looks like the next generations Microsoft Surface hinge, in combination with a flexible OLED display.

Unlike the Samsung Galaxy fold - the use of hinges to aid the folding of the OLED panel filled with fluids would in theory avoid the issues that the Galaxy fold experienced, while still using one screen and not two.

The point of the system is to "prevent foreign materials from entering the hinge assembly/device."

You can read the entire patent at WIPO.

It will be interesting to see if Microsoft will provide us with the first foldable laptop that holds up in daily use.
