Nvidia is steady, but AMD has just pushed ahead, and it's good news for the PC market as a whole.

According to Jon Peddie Research, AMD has seen its first quarter ahead of Nvidia - in terms of units shipped - since the second quarter of 2014. Intel still leads the market share graph, but that is due to integrated graphics.

The report has a lot of small but interesting details. While there is a small increase in sales for the second quarter in a row, the yearly sales have decreased by more than 10%. However, AMD shipments have increased by nearly 10%, while Nvidia by comparison is as steady as possible with no changes. Intel is also experiencing a small decrease in shipments by 1.4%, which the report attributed to an increase in laptops with separate graphics system.

The number of units shipped has dropped by 8.93 million from last year, resulting in "only" 76.7 million units sold. Despite this, the overall PC market is reported to grow 9.25% from last quarter, and 3.07% compared with the same quarter last year.

More interesting, tablet shipments have decreased from last quarter.

The big question is, will Nvidia regain its majority with the RTX Super Series and 16-Series, or has AMD taken over permanently for the next years to come?
