Nintendo targets YouTube channels over soundtrack rights

Hundreds of strikes sent to one channel, and at least one more is offline as Nintendo takes a stand against copyright infringement.

We're pretty sure that we're not the only ones who have ever taken to YouTube to listen to a video game soundtrack, and every now and then we like nothing more than working with a searing orchestral score playing in the background.

Many publishers have long let certain YouTube content makers use video game soundtracks as they see fit, either presenting OSTs in full or letting them loop certain popular tracks to create longer pieces of music, this despite the fact that technically speaking, uploading copyrighted music to YouTube - even if you're not profiting from it - is illegal.

However, Nintendo has seemingly decided to take a stand against practices such as this and has issued dozens of strikes against one YouTube channel for using Nintendo-owned music, and this follows a similar move whereby another was taken offline completely.

As GilvaSunner wrote on Twitter it's a "Game over" situation for the channel, and at the same time, the tweeter shared a screengrab of the many copyright claims that hit their inbox all at once. The thing is, while that must have been a painful moment for the operators of the YouTube channel, Nintendo is well within their rights to insist that the content is removed.

It follows a similar move two months ago when channel BrawlBRSTMs3 was removed for the same reason, and it's clear that Nintendo is looking to clamp down on illegal use of its music. The question remains as to whether other publishers will follow suit, or if most will continue to look the other way or even encourage their communities to share and promote their OSTs.

Thanks, VG247.
