Nintendo takes no prisoners

The NPD numbers are in for January and it is a pleasant read for anyone with Nintendo loyalties. Not only did the Nintendo DS and Wii crush all other platforms in the hardware race, but Nintendo laid claim to the top three positions in the software chart as well with Wii Fit registering an astounding 777000 sold units. If it continues at this pace Wii Fit could pass the PS3 in U.S. sales in a few months time. How could have imagined something like that before the start of this generation.

It is also good to see that Left 4 Dead has impressive legs. No doubt a result of its popularity online. Speaking of legs both New Super Mario Bros. and Mario Kart DS made the top ten - 32 months after release for NSMB and 38 months after release for Mario Kart DS. Microsoft saw a healthy rise in year-over-year sales for Xbox 360, while Sony saw all three of its platforms loosing ground compared to last year's January sales. Overall the industry rose 13% (hardware 17%, software 10%, accessories 11%), impressive considering the gloomy times.

January is not a big month for new releases, but the Xbox 360 versions of Skate 2 and The Lord of the Rings: Conquest managed to squeeze into the top ten. No sign of their PS3 counterparts however.

As always we thank our friends at Chartget! for use of their graphs and pie charts.
