The UK Government's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is investigating the PlayStation, Xbox and Switch live services to determine if these online services are fair and lawful when it comes to the practice of auto-renewals on rolling subscriptions, with users encouraged to share their experiences here.
If they come to the conclusion that these services are unfair or illegal, action could be taken against the gaming giants. Exactly what that action would be for PlayStation Network, Switch Online and Xbox Live, remains to be seen but we do know that the investigation specifically targets the auto-renewal process, including price hikes, the number of games being offered through these subscriptions, cancellations, and refunds.
"Our investigation will look into whether the biggest online gaming companies are being fair with their customers when they automatically renew their contracts, and whether people can easily cancel or get a refund," CMA chief exec Andrea Coscelli wrote in a statement. "Should we find that the firms aren't treating people fairly under consumer protection law, we are fully prepared to take action."
