Middle-earth Enterprises and German video game developer Daedalic Entertainment are teaming up to work on a new action-adventure game set in the The Lord of the Rings universe. As the studio revealed to us earlier this month at an exclusive press event in Hamburg, it will release The Lord of the Rings: Gollum in 2021 for PC and "relevant" consoles.
Apparently, the game runs in Epic's Unreal Engine, but except for the logo, no impressions or even concept art were presented during its first unveiling. However, the title gives us a promising tease as to the character from Middle-earth who will be the focus of the upcoming project: Gollum.
Daedalic wants to tell a new story in the well-known fantasy universe, which should remain true to the original material in every way possible. The studio made it clear that this applies not only to the overall story but in terms of the visual and the "acoustic" design as well. According to the official press release, the licensing deal may even result in several games.
"Focusing on characters and stories, as well as the elaborate and atmospheric artworks, Daedalic's mission is to make games for readers who become gamers," wrote Fredrica Drotos, brand officer at Middle-earth Enterprise. "We are looking forward to the release of Daedalic's narrative adventure game. This combination fits in perfectly with the complex, multi-faceted world of Middle-earth, launched by J.R.R. Tolkien."
