Sales for Wii U have been slower than predicted, and Nintendo have now revealed that they managed to sell 3.45 million units of Wii U up until March 31. The initial plan was to sell 5.5 million, something that was later revised to 4 million - a target they didn't quite manage to achieve. What's worse is that only 390,000 units were sold in the last quarter.
During the year (April 1, 2012-March 31, 2013) a massive 14 million Nintendo 3DS units were sold (total: 31.9 million), but that was still short of the 15 million target. Still some ways to go to the mark of the predecessor Nintendo DS (153.87 million).
Regardless of these missed marks Nintendo still managed to turn a profit, albeit a smaller one than projected. For the fiscal year Nintendo posted a profit of 7.1 billion yen (£46.7 million), compared to a loss of 43.2 billion yen (£284.1 million) last year. Revenue was down 1.9 percent year-over-year to 635.4 billion yen (£4.2 billion) - not something you'd want considering the aging Wii was replaced by the brand new Wii U - something that ought to have been a major driver for revenue, if perhaps not profit.
