Oculus is one of the leading names in VR right now alongside Sony with their PSVR headsets and of course the HTC Vive brand, and now SuperData has revealed some predictions for Oculus in 2019 and beyond.
Oculus Quest is their headset built for virtual reality without requiring a PC or console, since you only need the headset itself and controllers to play, and SuperData says that since interest in this is high, they expect 1.3 million units to sell this year and for annual XR revenue (extended reality) to reach $11.5 billion USD. Speaking of XR revenue as a whole, SuperData reveals that it reached $6.6B in 2018 and is projected to increase 442% by 2022.
Oculus Rift is the headset they're most well-known for, having sold 160,000 units in Q4 last year, with the Oculus Go (another standalone VR headset) also selling 555,000. PSVR, however, sold 700,000 in the same period, while HTC Vive managed 130,000, with Sony's headset actually overtaking Samsung Gear VR as the market leader. All of this helped push annual VR revenue up to $3.6 billion, which represents a 30% increase year-on-year.
"2019 is poised to be an important year for VR with the introduction of the Oculus Quest," said Stephanie Llamas, Head of VR/AR at SuperData. "Device tethering to consoles and PCs has been an obstacle for consumer adoption, so a standalone headset like the Quest could be a real game changer. Likewise, the introduction of new headset technology like eye tracking in the HTC VIVE Pro Eye is likely to accelerate growth of enterprise usage."
The Oculus Go has reached 1 million sales since its launch last May, which is due to its low price point of $199 and ease-of-use, but PSVR still maintained its popularity thanks to sales and strong titles like Beat Saber, Astro Bot, and Moss. This is why games are the best way to make money in VR so far, making up 68% of XR software in 2018. This also applies to Pokémon Go which had earnings of $1.3 billion last year, making up two-thirds (66%) of the $2 billion XR games market. When talking about VR specifically, games earned 43% of the $1.3 billion in software revenue.
Location-based entertainment also helped grow the field, but it's all about VR as we look ahead to 2019. Oculus Quest is of course a very exciting product, one VR developer Jess Schell also estimates will sell 1 million units this year, but it remains to be seen how it can compete with the HTC Vive and other products on the market. That said, it can't hurt that it's launching alongside a game dedicated solely to Star Wars' Darth Vader.
